3
Multi-faceted Problem

Increasing Level of Odor
High Nitrate in Groundwater Risk
of Methemoglobinemia In infants
4
Multi-faceted Solution 10 Year Plan
Areas of Emphasis -Wastewater -Air
Pollution -Nitrate Neutralization -Improving
Public Relations
5
Solutions for Wastewater
  • Install new and improved system within 1-5 yrs.
  • Three tier system
  • Anaerobic Lagoon w/ Peat
  • Grate System
  • Entire community benefits

6
Solution for Air Pollution
-Couple Wet Scrubber w/ Bio-filtration -Wet
Scrubber Neutralization of VOCs -Bio-filter
Neutralization of Aldehydes -Bio-filtration
utilizes natural and sustainable processes
Example of a Bio-filter
7
Nitrate Neutralization Phytoremediation
-Native Species will Sequester Nitrate -Populus
Angustifolia Narrowleaf Poplar -Effective Method
and Low Cost -Planted at south end of Facility
Poplar Plantation
8
Public Relations
  • Informational Brochure
  • Community Involvement Annual Planting Program
  • Odor Response Protocol

9
Current Treatment of BJsChop-it-up wastewater
  • Screens
  • Settling tanks
  • Filters
  • Pond
  • Released onto irrigation field
  • .this is a good start but BJs plant needs more

10
Decentralized WastewaterTreatment
  • centralized wastewater treatments are a thing of
    the past
  • Decentralized has many benefits
  • -more specialized
  • -would get the community involved
  • -eliminates nitrate input into the
    groundwater

11
Additions/Changes
  • Replace the cement pad used as a loading zone
    with a grate
  • Add a disinfection step
  • Ultraviolet light disinfection

12
Additions/Changes
  • Peat covered anaerobic lagoons
  • Use BJs facility to treat wastewater of
residents and farms in the area

13
Funding?
  • Clean Water State Revolving Fund
  • Established under the Clean Water Act in 1987
  • Grants and loans given to public projects
    upgrading wastewater facilities

14
Rendering Plant Odors
There are over 300 compounds that come from a
rendering plant exhaust, with only 24 to 40 of
them volatile organic compounds The compounds
are alkanes, alkenes, ketones, hydrocarbons,
alcohols, alkyl halides, fatty acids, amines,
aromatics, aldehydes and epoxides
15
BJs Wet Scrubber
The efficiency of the scrubber BJ has ranges
between 70 and 99 percent depending on desired
compound(s) to be removed. More effective in
removing inorganic compounds than removing
volatile organic compounds (VOC). Mainly used to
facilitate a larger surface area for
liquid-particle contact from the exhaust gas,
especially for ones using counter current designs.
16
Biofiltration Set Up
This is energy efficient, cost effective and
environmentally friendly. The bed is made of
organic material such as peat moss, compost,
bark, woodchips, rice hulls or a combination of
these. Generally, the substrate is filled with
stone (road metal or scoria) and the organic
material is placed on top of the stones.
  • Organic Pollutant O2 gt CO2 H2O Heat
    Mineral Salts Biomass

17
Odor Regulations
"no person shall allow, suffer, cause or
permit the emission of odorous gases, liquids or
solids into the atmosphere in such quantities as
to cause air pollution." IDAPA 58.01.01.776.
Upon hearing complaints ..the DEQ Regional
Office will conduct an investigation of the
source. As part of the investigation, the DEQ
Regional Office will conduct a file search for
previous complaints, will determine the validity
of the complaint pursuant to the Odor
Determination Process outlined in these
Procedures, and will determine compliance with
any existing source odor management plan.
PM00-6 Policy for Responding to Odor Complaints
18
Public Relations
  • Communicate with local residents
  • brochure
  • Annual planting of trees by elementary students

19
Complaint Response Protocol
  • Record intensity and frequency of any odors
  • Location of odor
  • Identify potential sources
  • Direct contact with residents
