Title: Garden State

1
Garden State
  • a study of
  • Maple Garden Restaurant

2
Existing Spacedaylighting electric lighting
acoustics
  • What is working
  • -kitchen sounds
  • -outdoor seating
  • What isnt working
  • -cramped eating area
  • -lack of daylighting
  • -heavy reliance of fluorescent lighting
  • -the space echoes
  • -the material palette does not enhance the
    interior

3
Daylighting Questions
  • How much daylight does the space receive with the
    electric lights on?
  • What is an amount of daylight needed in a dining
    environment?
  • How could opening up the North wall with glazing
    affect the space?
  • Will reliance on daylighting over electric
lighting make the atmosphere more enjoyable?
  • How could the existing conditions in the space be
    used more efficiently?

4
Daylighting Hypothesis
  • If alterations are made to Maple Garden
Restaurant by incorporating daylight and opening
the space to the outdoors, the experiential and
spatial qualities of the space will be greatly
    enhanced.

5
Daylighting Redesign
  • light meter measurements suggested that the
existing daylight factor was not sufficient for a
    dining space
  • added windows and light shelves to North wall of
    the daylighting model
  • enlarged windows on the West wall of the
    daylighting model
  • with the redesign, the daylight factor in the
space increased from .26 to 7.1

6
Electric Lighting Questions
  • If more daylighting is incorporated during the
daytime, how can mood lighting be achieved during
    evening hours?
  • Should the source be ambient or task lighting?
  • How many luminaires are necessary in the space?
  • What kind of lamp is most efficient?
  • What luminaire color palette would provide the
best mood lighting in the space?

7
Electric Lighting Hypothesis
  • If more daylighting is incorporated during the
day, the presence of soft mood lighting during
the evening will provide differentiation between
    meal times.

8
Electric Lighting Redesign
  • sconces added at each table to provide task and
    mood lighting
  • two shades of blue create a calming atmosphere
  • we chose a 60 watt halogen bulb for its
    efficiency and small size
  • constructed of a plexiglass shell and was mounted
    on wood
  • the sconce would provide enough illuminance as a
task light in combination with another ambient
    light source

9
Acoustics Questions
  • How does the material palette affect the sound
    quality in the space?
  • What is the Reverberation Time (RT) in the space?
  • Is the RT appropriate for a dining atmosphere?
  • How can the RT be reduced?
  • Which finish materials provide the best sound
    absorption?

10
Acoustics Hypothesis
If the Reverberation Time (RT) in Maple Garden
Restaurant is reduced, a more intimate eating
atmosphere will result.
11
Acoustics Redesign
  • The RT in the existing space .91 seconds
  • sound quality was muddled and unpleasantly loud
  • To reduce the RT, the carpet was replaced in the
redesign by thicker carpet on 40 oz. foam rubber
    (NRC.55)
  • Sound absorption panels were also added to the
    redesign (NRC.85)

12
Redesign Summary and Lessons Learned
  • Appropriate daylight levels for a restaurant
    space
  • Methods and materials that can allow daylight to
    penetrate deeper into the room
  • The importance of maintaining the essence of a
place while at the same time changing it for the
    better
  • Logistics of luminaire construction and wiring
and its eventual application to the space it will
    occupy
  • A space can be defined as much by lighting and
acoustical properties as the physical elements
    that exist within it
  • Materials and methods required to increase or
    decrease a spaces reverberation time
