• How much daylight does the space receive with the
  electric lights on?
• What is an amount of daylight needed in a dining
  environment?
• How could opening up the North wall with glazing
  affect the space?
• Will reliance on daylighting over electric
  lighting make the atmosphere more enjoyable?
• How could the existing conditions in the space be
  used more efficiently?

Daylighting Hypothesis

• If alterations are made to Maple Garden
  Restaurant by incorporating daylight and opening
  the space to the outdoors, the experiential and
  spatial qualities of the space will be greatly
  enhanced.

Daylighting Redesign

• light meter measurements suggested that the
  existing daylight factor was not sufficient for a
  dining space
• added windows and light shelves to North wall of
  the daylighting model
• enlarged windows on the West wall of the
  daylighting model
• with the redesign, the daylight factor in the
  space increased from .26 to 7.1

  daytime, how can mood lighting be achieved during
  evening hours?
• Should the source be ambient or task lighting?
• How many luminaires are necessary in the space?
• What kind of lamp is most efficient?
• What luminaire color palette would provide the
  best mood lighting in the space?

Electric Lighting Hypothesis

• If more daylighting is incorporated during the
  day, the presence of soft mood lighting during
  the evening will provide differentiation between
  meal times.

Electric Lighting Redesign

• sconces added at each table to provide task and
  mood lighting
• two shades of blue create a calming atmosphere
• we chose a 60 watt halogen bulb for its
  efficiency and small size
• constructed of a plexiglass shell and was mounted
  on wood
• the sconce would provide enough illuminance as a
  task light in combination with another ambient
  light source

Acoustics Hypothesis
If the Reverberation Time (RT) in Maple Garden
Restaurant is reduced, a more intimate eating
atmosphere will result.

Acoustics Redesign

• The RT in the existing space .91 seconds
• sound quality was muddled and unpleasantly loud
• To reduce the RT, the carpet was replaced in the
  redesign by thicker carpet on 40 oz. foam rubber
  (NRC.55)
• Sound absorption panels were also added to the
  redesign (NRC.85)
