2Travel Medicine is a relatively new specialty so
the establishment of The Faculty of Travel
Medicine within the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2006 was not only
historic, particularly for the unique inclusion
of nurses and other non-medical health
professionals, but is also confirmation of the
important recognition of this field of practice.
3Faculty of Travel Medicine Aims
- Promote high standards of travel medicine
practice through the development and
administration of examinations and assessments
for healthcare professionals in the tradition of
the Colleges high standards. - Organise and support high quality Continuing
Professional Development - Encourage the incorporation of travel medicine
into undergraduate curricula - Relate closely to other involved institutions and
specialties - Represent the specialty at regional, national and
international levels - Develop constructive relationships with the
public and the media.

7Faculty of Travel Medicine Membership Criteria
- Founder membership is welcomed and currently
there are three grades of membership (Associate,
Member Fellow) available in the Faculty. These
are open to a wide range of health professionals,
in addition to those medically qualified. The
grades are - Founder Associates Those with the Travel
Medicine Diplomas of the College, or of Glasgow
University (DTM) will automatically be eligible
to apply for Associate Membership. - Founder MembersThose with the College or Glasgow
University Travel Medicine Diploma and in
addition a higher qualification such as an MSc,
MN, MD, MPhil or PhD in a relevant subject will
be automatically eligible for Founder Membership.
- Founder FellowsThe College Fellowship Committee
will also accept proposals for Founder Fellows on
behalf of those who have made very substantial
and special contributions to the specialty.

standards of healthcare. - Acting as a focus for discussion and debate and
encouraging activities on the wider healthcare
front that promotes better health for populations
in Scotland, the UK and overseas. - Advising and influencing Governments, the public
and professions on healthcare issues
