At Hull University Union -
  • Pre SUEI Innovation was not a particular
    strength!
  • SUEI taught us that we were merely tinkering
    with old ideas, being too insular and not
    collaborating enough both within the Union
    movement and outside bodies.

Improvements and Ideas during the process
  • Virtual Dee an on-line receptionist who can
    answer queries from students any time of day or
    night.
  • On-line student handbook sent out on USB pen
    instead of paper copy.
  • Virtual Bank Accounts for Societies linked into
    our accounting system so they can check
    expenditure and progress.

  • Various staff reward schemes duvet days, team
    of term.
  • Staff lunchtime intra-mural football league.
  • Costed electronic Staff Rota for commercial areas.
  • Internal Staff Learning and Development Team.
  • Now Discover your Strengths programme for
    managers and officers.

Improvements continued
  • Social networking - commission based links
    system, enabling students to earn money through
    tickets sales.
  • Bluetooth server in Commercial areas will allow
    messages to be sent wirelessly to student
    customers.
  • Use of internal P.A system to
  • advertise current events
  • and news around The
  • building.
  • Use of webcams for Scarborough
  • Campus for advice centre
  • support.

  • Participation and Recreation Survey.
  • Beach Tournament bringing 2 campuses together.
  • Fresh Air Fitness.
  • Central Resources Electronic folder
  • Setting up a Design and Print service to extend
    our service externally.
  • Mini-site rewards and incentives.
  • Create Virtual Sabbatical Officer.

Further plans Enterprise Involvement.
  • Assisting the University to help promote 3
    strands which will lead to ideas to be used by
    the union
  • 1. Student Enterprise clubs/societies
  • 2. Academic Enterprise linking degrees to
    commercial activity eg music degree commercial
    band.
  • 3. External Enterprise working with local
    industries and ideas e.g Xing Smoothies.

SUEI Perspective and Involvement
  • Highlighted our weaker areas and focussed us on
    what needs to be done and made us think!!!
  • Networking ensured sharing ideas and best
    practise from other unions.
  • SUEI guidance on allocating resources for looking
    to the future with planning, external sources,
    changing student demographics and University
    Strategic plan.
  • Evaluation and review of the new creative ideas
    will ensure that we are continually meeting our
    customers needs and wants.

  • B 1.2 Innovative Development.
  • Split into 4 groups and take 1 strand per group
    for how you would evidence for your unions
  • 1- Adequate resources for future planning.
  • 2- Investigate future options from external
    sources.
  • 3- Analyse future trends in student demographics.
  • 4- Consider how University Strategic Plan may
    link.
