INFORMATION ABOUT CNMI
  • The CNMI main island of Saipan is located
about 100 miles northeast of Guam, about 1,200
miles southeast of Tokyo, and 3,300 miles west of
Honolulu. The smallest of the U.S. insular areas,
the CNMI consists of 14 islands with a total land
    area of 183.5 square miles.
  •

SAIPAN/TINIAN/ROTA
  • Saipan is about 12.5 miles long and 5.5 mile
wide and has a total  land area of 46.5 square
miles. Saipan's  54 mile  coast line is irregular
except on the western side Saipan has 14 miles of
    beach.
  • Tinian is approximately 10.5 miles long by 5
miles at its widest point and has a total area of
39.2 square miles and a coastline 38 miles  in
    length.
  • Rota is approximately 10.5 miles long and 3
miles wide with a  38.3 mile coastline
encompassing an area of 32.8 square miles

5
RING OF FIRE
  • CNMI is in the Ring of Fire and have 9 active
    volcanoes North of Saipan currently.
  • We are working with USGS to install real time
monitoring network stations and Saipan will be
the hub of the network and transmission of
volcanic data to USGS will be done real time thru
satellite.  Project will begin in 2008 and on.

    Guard) was recognized as STORMREADY/

  • A first for CNMI, being recognized.
  • Tinian and Rota will followed within the next
    one year.
  • Signage courtesy of NOAA Guam were placed at
    Airport and Seaport

Tsunami
  • There is no recorded tsunami history for CNMI
but according to reports, a tsunami passed by the
CNMI in 1964 from the Chile Earthquake event that
hit Tokyo, Japan and killed thousands of people
in Japan.  According to USGS inundation model for
tsunami, the maximum wave heights that we are
going to get from a tsunami is 6 feet only.  The
continental shelf, Marianas Trench with no
sedimentation, the fringing reeflines are the
factors as to the how high the wave will be.
