SAVED BY GRACE -- Eph. 28,9
  • For by grace have ye been saved through faith
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of
God 9 not of works, that no man should glory.
  • 1. A greatly abused and misused passage!
  • (principally since the days of the Protestant
    Reformation).
  • 2. It does not say, grace only!
  • 3. Many dont know (or ignore) what grace is and
    what it does.

3
Grace defined by the Scriptures
  • Titus 211 plus 34,5, For the grace of God hath
appeared, bringing salvation to all men, But
when the kindness of God our Saviour, and his
love toward man, appeared 5 not by works done
in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but
according to his mercy he saved us.
  • Grace the unmerited love, kindness and mercy
of God toward sinful man who needs redemption in
    order to live eternally.
  • (Man cant save himself by perfect law-keeping
because all have sinned, Rom. 323).

brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you,
which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, 2
by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the
word which I preached unto you, except ye
    believed in vain.

Titus 211,12, For the grace of God hath
appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12
instructing us, to the intent that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly and righteously and godly in this present
world.
  • Matt. 2818-20, All authority hath been given
unto me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go ye
therefore, and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them into the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit 20 teaching
them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded
you and lo, I am with you always, even unto the
    end of the world.

Acts 2032, And now I commend you to God, and to
the word of his grace, which is able to build
you up, and to give you the inheritance among
all them that are sanctified.
  • Acts 157, And when there had been much
questioning, Peter rose up, and said unto them,
Brethren, ye know that a good while ago God made
choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles
should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

14
So we see that -- Grace is bestowed by the
Gospel!
  • They are inseparable. They are conjoined, and
    so, practically the same!
  • Acts 2024, But I hold not my life of any
ac-count as dear unto myself, so that I may
ac-complish my course, and the ministry which I
received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the
gospel of the grace of God.
  • Gal. 16, I marvel that ye are so quickly
re-moving from him that called you in the grace
of Christ unto a different gospel.
  • So, there is no grace (shown) where there is no
    gospel (proclaimed, preached)!

15
For by grace have ye been saved through faith
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of
God 9 not of works, that no man should glory
-- Eph. 28,9. What is the gift of God?
  • The Calvinist says that faith is the gift of
God either one has it or he doesnt have it! He
is either of the elect (has the gift) or is of
the reprobate (doesnt have the gift)!
  • This cant be. Why? Faith in the Greek text is
a word of feminine gender, but it is of neuter
gender! It refers back to salvation by grace
through faith. That is the gift!

16
A GIFT OF GOD
  • Noah was saved by grace.
  • Gen. 68, But Noah found favor in the eyes of
    Jehovah. (Favor grace)
  • But he was saved by faith and obedience.
  • Heb. 117, By faith Noah, being warned of God
concerning things not seen as yet, moved with
godly fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his
house through which he con-demned the world, and
became heir of the righteousness which is
    according to faith.
  • He was saved by water.
  • 1 Pet. 320, eight souls were saved through
    water .

17
A GIFT OF GOD
  • Jericho was taken as a gift.
  • Josh. 61-5, Now Jericho was straitly shut up
because of the children of Israel none went out,
and none came in. 2 And Jehovah said unto
Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho,
and the king thereof, and the mighty men of
valor. 3 And ye shall compass the city, all the
men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt
thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall
bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the
ark and the seventh day ye shall compass the
    city seven times,

18
and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And
it shall be, that, when they make a long blast
with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound
of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a
great shout and the wall of the city shall fall
down flat, and the people shall go up every man
straight before him.
  • Jericho was taken by faith, after
  • Heb. 1130, By faith the walls of Jericho fell
down, after they had been compassed about for
    seven days.
  • Gods grace gives when mans faith obeys!

19
A GIFT OF GOD
  • Lives given to Paul (thats grace!), but the
gift was conditioned upon mans obedience.
  • Acts 2722-31, And now I exhort you to be of
good cheer for there shall be no loss of life
among you, but only of the ship. 23 For there
stood by me this night an angel of the God whose
I am, whom also I serve, 24 say-ing, Fear not,
Paul thou must stand before Caesar and lo, God
hath granted thee all them that sail with thee.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer for I
    believe God, that it .

20
shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me.
26 But we must be cast upon a certain island.
27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we
were driven to and fro in the sea of Adria,
about midnight the sailors surmised that they
were drawing near to some country 28 and they
sounded, and found twenty fath-oms and after a
little space, they sounded again, and found
fifteen fathoms. 29 And fearing lest haply we
should be cast ashore on rocky ground, they let
go four anchors from the stern, and wished for
the day. ..
21
30 And as the sailors were seeking to flee out
of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the
sea, under color as though they would lay out
anchors from the foreship, 31 Paul said to the
centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide
in the ship, ye cannot be saved.
  • God expects obedience!
  • Mt. 721-27, Not every one that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of
heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father
who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, did we not pro-phesy by thy
name, and by thy name cast

22
out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never
knew you depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Every one therefore that heareth these words
of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a
wise man, who built his house upon the rock 25
and the rain descended, and the floods came, and
the winds blew, and beat upon that house and if
fell not for it was founded upon the rock. 26
And every one that heareth these words of mine,
and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a
foolish man, who built his house upon the sand
27 and
23
the rain descended, and the floods came, and the
winds blew, and smote upon that house and it
fell and great was the fall thereof.
  • Rom. 617,18, But thanks be to God, that,
whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became
obedient from the heart to that form of teaching
whereunto ye were delivered 18 and being made
free from sin, ye became servants of
    righteousness.
  • Heb. 59, and having been made perfect, he
became unto all them that obey him the au-thor of
    eternal salvation.

24
For by grace have ye been saved through faith
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of
God 9 not of works, that no man should glory.
  • Of what works is the Holy Spirit speaking? Here
    is the issue!
  • The Protestant Reformers, combating the works by
the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church,
misapplied this passage to such works as those,
and today Protestant chur-ches perpetuate that
error, applying the pas-sage to that which one
    must do to be saved!
  • So, they say, baptism is a work and therefore
cant be a part of salvation by grace!

25
Paul was talking about works of what? Stay with
the context!
  • 1. Not the works of the Catholic Church for it
    did not exist then!
  • 2. Not the works of obedience to the gospel, for
Christ is the author of salvation to all them
    that obey him! (Heb. 59).
  • There are things to DO to be saved! Acts
    237 96 (Jesus speaking) 1630 2210 (Paul
    speaking).
  • Believing is a work! Jn. 629, Jesus
answered and said unto them, This is the work of
God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

26
Paul was talking about works of what? Stay with
the context!
  • The works of the law of Moses (that upon which
    the Judaizers were insisting!)
  • Gal. 216, yet knowing that a man is not
justified by the works of the law but through
faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed on Christ
Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in
Christ, and not by the works of the law because
by the works of the law shall no flesh be
    justified.
  • Salvation by works by perfect law-keeping

27
Men are not saved by their own works.
  • Mt. 721-23, Not every one that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of
heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father
who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, did we not pro-phesy by thy
name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy
name do many mighty works? 23 And then will I
profess unto them, I never knew you depart from
me, ye that work iniquity. (Iniquity
lawlessness, a state of being without law).

28
Tit. 35, not by works done in righteous-ness,
which we did ourselves, but according to his
mercy he saved us.
  • 2 Tim. 19, who saved us, and called us with a
holy calling, not according to our works, but
according to his own purpose and grace.
  • There is no glorying in obeying God!
  • Lk. 1710, Even so ye also, when ye shall have
done all the things that are commanded you, say,
We are unprofitable servants we have done that
which it was our duty to do. 1 Cor. 916, For if
    I preach the gospel, I

29
have nothing to glory of for necessity is laid
upon me for woe is unto me, if I preach not the
gospel.
  • CONCLUSION
  • 1. We are saved by grace when we obey the gospel
    terms of salvation.
  • 2. We are not saved by perfect law-keeping.
That is why salvation was not by the works of the
    law of Moses!
  • 3. Salvation is Gods gift, but it is given
conditionally! We must obey the gospel.

30
If baptism is ruled out by Eph. 28,9, then all
obedience to God is ruled out!
  • Believe is something that is done by
man. Repent is something that is done by
man. Confess is something that is done by
man. Baptism is something that is done by man.
  • All four are commanded by God in the gospel.
  • Now, if one obeys the first command (believe) and
yet is saved by grace, why is he not saved by
grace when he obeys the other three?
  • All four are things for man to do, but are not
the works of which Paul speaks!

31
Salvation by grace through faith is salvation by
obedience to the terms of the gospel message.
  • Friend, have YOU been saved by grace through
    faith?
  • The answer depends upon whether or not you
    have obeyed the gospel!
