Power driven machines, Moving parts
Mechanisms
  • are the possible sources of accidents in
    factories
  • SAFETY is extremely important

16
Safety measures
  • How to stop the machine instantly.
  • Clamp the tool/work properly.
  • Do not touch or handle waste metal.
  • Loose hair, loose clothing (shirts, blouses,
saris), neck-ties are not permitted. Loose hair
    comb well knot firmly.
  • Take extreme care in the use of hand tools.
  • Wear shoes.
  • Wear protective spectacles (will be provided)

17
Machining
18
Cutting Tools
  • There are basically two types of cutting tools
  • Single point (e.g. turning tools).
  • Multiple point (e.g. milling tools).

20
Cutting Mechanism
  • During machining, the material is removed in the
form of chips, which are generated by shear
deformation along a plane called the shear plane.

21
Chip Types
  • Continuous chips
  • Ductile material
  • Ex Mild steel, Al
  • High speed
  • Low feed
  • Small depth of cut

22
Tool Geometry
  • The shape and orientation of the cutting tool
greatly affects the chip formation mechanics

23
Rake Angle
  • Of particular importance is the rake angle that
the tool makes with the workpiece normal
  • Effects on the chip formation
