Title: Mojave Desert Pilot Project Overview and Deliverables
1Mojave Desert Pilot Project Overview and
Deliverables
- Saltcedar Identification and Mapping
- Services Provided by GeoSpatial Partners LLC.
- Contract Coordinator Valerie Page
- Mojave WMA Coordinator
2Project Goals
- To Identify and map saltcedar along the Mojave
River - Derive EvapoTranspiration map for saltcedar
- To help RCD in noxious weed inventory efforts and
provide the Mojave Water Agency with geo-spatial
data to support water management efforts
3Data
- Satellite data
- High resolution image (Ikonos 4 m multispectral)
collected on September 17, 2003 - Medium Resolution Landsat 7 image collected on
August 04, 2002 - Field Data (June 21, 2004)
- Record of Saltcedar sample location for class
membership development and accuracy assessment - Record of sample spectra including saltcedar,
cotton wood, willow and other land use types - Record of spectra from water body and sand using
CROPSCAN Radiometer to help in the image
atmospheric correction process.
4Data
- Evapotranspiration
- Downloaded year 2002 and 2003 daily weather data
including ET0 from the CIMIS database - Station ID 117 Victorville
- Station ID 134 Barstow NE
- Consulted weed experts and publications for
appropriate coefficients to used to calculate
saltcedar water use
5Procedure
- Saltcedar Map
- Used GeoSpatial Partners proprietary algorithm
to develop saltcedar membership function.
Function based on saltcedar spectral and spatial
behavior.
6Procedure
- Saltcedar Water Use (ET)
- Used Equation reported on CIMIS web site
- ET KsKdKmcET0
- Ks species factor
- Kd density factor
- Kmc microclimate factor
- ET0 reference evapotranspiration
(recorded by CIMIS)
7Procedure
- ET coefficients for Saltcedar
- Ks 0.1- 0.3 (used 0.18 to be consistent with
previous reports) - Kmc 1 (recommended)
- Kd was derived from imagery
- Kd Factor
- Derived by normalizing saltcedar vegetation cover
to vegetation cover from reference grass where
ET0 was measured (CIMIS)

Classification
Sample Distributions
Error of Commission 9.09 Error of Omission
9.09 Overall Accuracy 95.2
Accuracy assessment results for the
classification that used the high resolution
IKONOS image. Error sources are high density
cotton wood and willow and single saltcedar in
sandy areas.
