Things to do BEFORE arriving at the practical
  • Read OHS guidelines
  • Wear closed in shoes
  • without them you will not be permitted into the
    practical
  • Fast for at least 4 hrs
  • This means no food and no fluid (except water)

Where is the prac?
  • Go to P6-19 for the prac
  • You need to be on time
  • Expect the pracs will take the full 2 hrs

Aim
  • To compare the glycaemic effect of different
    CHO-rich foods ? exercise

What youll do
  • Test foods containing 50g CHO in each serve
  • Note there are different CHO concentrations in
    each food
  • different serve sizes for each food
  • Test impact of exercise on the response to foods

The subjects
  • If you dont cope well with blood TELL BRUCE
  • If you have diabetes you should not be a test
    subject
  • If you are pregnant you should not be a test
    subjects
  • If you have a strong food allergy you should not
    be a test subject
  • If you cant eat or dont like the foods do NOT
    volunteer to be a test subject

Collecting the Data
  • Work in a group of 4 students
  • Subjects will have finger prick blood samples
    collected
  • 1 will eat exercise and 1 will eat rest
  • 4 foods tested in each condition in each class
  • 15 prac classes
  • Whole 210 students will share results ie there
    will be one data set to use for the prac write up

  • Jelly Beans
  • Baked Beans
  • Gatorade
  • Apple Juice

Blood glucose sampling
  • 10 finger prick blood samples
  • Monitors absorption of glucose (from food) over
    time
  • shows different rates of absorption according the
    Glycaemic Index of the food
  • Shows different patterns of absorption depending
    upon the presence or absence of exercise

The Data
  • Once all practical classes have completed this
    practical the data will be made available to the
    whole course.
  • A powerpoint file with tips on writing this
    report will be available on the course homepage
    when the data is ready

When is this report due?
  • If you choose to submit this report it is due on
    Tuesday 12th June by 3pm (swotvac) for all
    students except those in class 25558 (due Tuesday
    19th June)
