CASE STUDY
This project is a fundamental part of the
overall regeneration of East London. Once
complete, the scheme will provide an extra 20
million litres of water a day for the East London
area by March 2005.
Customer Thames Water Contractor Murphy
Group Project ELRED (East London Resource
Development Scheme) Date January 2004
FT Pipeline Systems has joined forces with
Murphy Group to assist Thames Water with its East
London Resource Development (ELRED) scheme.
ELRED is part of a 32 million partnership scheme
by Thames Water to use water from previously
untapped sources and meet ever increasing demands
for water in East London. This part of the
programme involves extracting naturally occuring
groundwater and transferring it to a treatment
works for processing into potable water. FT
Pipeline Systems has been chosen to supply the
pipe (600mm, 400mm and 300mm diameters) to be
installed in a tunnel. The steel pipe has a 25
(1) (a) cement mortar lining, a three-layer
polyethylene coating, and socket weld ends. The
pipe is installed by lowering 3 or 4 metre
lengths down into an access shaft. The lengths
are then welded together, protecting the joints
with Canusa heat-shrink wraps. This type of
welded pipe is suitable on a project of this
nature where the pipe has to be pulled through a
tunnel.
