Smart Sensors

• Modern manufacturing networks have intelligent
  sensors that have built in microcontrollers.
  These sensors can signal when there is a
  calibration error. Some are self-annealing,
  meaning they can take themselves out of the
  network if they are not operating properly.

Robotics

• Robotic technology developed in the 1960s. At one
  time they used a teach pendant to program
  various positions. When the pendant was played
  back, the robot moved to each position at a
  pre-defined velocity. Robots of the future will
  program themselves based on information from a
  CAD-based manufacturing network.
• Robotic degrees of freedom defines each axis a
  robot moves on.

Artificial Intelligence

• Artificial intelligence uses heuristics, or
  English-like commands to program machines (such
  as fry an egg or melt butter).
• Neural Networks, a subset of artificial
  intelligence, uses cybernetics. It is an attempt
  to model the neuron structure of the brain using
  computer based models. While the mathematics can
  become quite complex and time consuming, neural
  networks have proven to be very powerful at
  analyzing data.
• Fuzzy Logic is often lumped in with artificial
  intelligence, although officially it is based on
  a different type of mathematics. Fuzzy logic
  interprets vague human like statements like move
  the cart a little to the left, or add a lot
  more water to the tank.

Environment

• Today many jobs for technicians are available
  from environmental firms. Since the discovery in
  the 1940s that car emissions were harmful to the
  environment, much has been to increase efficiency
  and finding the best methods to convert or
  dispose of pollutants.
