1
The Renaissance
  • Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci
  • ByCourtney and Cassie

2
Description of Renaissance
  • Renaissance means to be reborn again and during
this time period the European civilization was
reborn. This period began around the 14th century
and reached its height around the 15th and 16th
century. There was many different changes in art
    during this reformation.

3
Style
  • During this time period pictures seemed to have
more life verisimilitude which means it looks
very similar to the human body or objects being
painted. Most of the paintings were classical
Greek like and showed human beauty.

4
Leonardos skills and training
  • He had worked for a master painter in Florence,
but soon left to open his own workshop. He was
not only skilled as a painter but also an
architect, inventor, and scientist. He went
through many trainings to develop his skills in
art. Leonardo is known to be one of the greatest
    artist of all time.

5
Michelangelo skills and training
  • Whenever he was a young boy, his father enrolled
him in a workshop, which is where he began to
study sculpting and painting. He was a painter
but his sculptor teacher inspired some of his
greatest works of art. Most of his talents were
self taught, he didnt want people to see him as
part of a workshop. When he grew older he grew
interest in studying music and poetry. Today he
is known as one of the worlds greatest artist.

6
Symbolism
  • Michelangelo was a very religious man and a lot
of his paintings portrayed his religious beliefs.
Leonardo Da Vinci on the other hand didnt really
have any specific symbolism but did portray some
    religion in his art work.

7
Description of Style
  • Michelangelos paintings portrayed mostly the
beauty of the human body. He is very precise in
his paintings, his sculptures were very detailed
in showing the veins and muscles in the human
    body.
  • Leonardo Da Vinci styles consisted of blending
color and shadows also known as sfumato. This
created the illusion that roads or images
    disappear into the painting.

8
Mediums
  • Neither Michelangelo nor Leonardo Da Vinci used
just one medium. They used different mediums to
create the picture according to styles and
textures. All the different mediums define the
picture and creates a different look. They have
    explored all types of mediums.

9
Difficulties to Overcome
  • Leonardo lived in a rich family and was really
well educated and had almost anything he wanted,
so really had no struggles when he was younger.
  • Michelangelo on the other hand he tried to teach
himself techniques when he was younger but
eventually went to a workshop to learn the
techniques of art. His father was who got him
started in art work and finally put him in a
    workshop.

10
Similarities
  • One similarity between Michelangelo and Leonardo
Da Vinci was that they painted the objects into a
triangular shape. If there are people in the
painting they seemed to form a triangle shape and
you could draw a triangle around them with your
    finger.

11
Artist completely opposite of Michelangelo and
Leonardo Da Vinci
  • An artist that is completely opposite of
Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci is Georgia O
Keefe. She is an older lady who really hates
flowers but most of her paintings are pictures
    of Flowers.

12
Influence
  • During the Renaissance time period it was an
influence to them because all of the pictures
that were painted were very life like and
    detailed precisely. Michelangelo s paintings
were greatly influenced by religion and also
showed off his talents in very difficult
paintings. He considered male nude one of the
most foremost subject in art. He was detailed
while creating the human body, like the muscular
    tension in a mans leg.

13
Purpose of Art Work
  • During this time period a lot of the art work
expressed feelings or told stories. Da Vinci and
Michelangelo created many different pieces to
show off their talent and a lot of the pieces
told religious stories or had religious meanings.
They transformed their art in classical Greek
style and made the paintings more realistic. All
of the paintings were very detailed and human
    like.

14
Michelangelos Work
Supper
  • David is one of Michelangelos greatest work of
art. The body is very defined and you can see
almost every muscle in the body.

15
Pieta
  • Pieta was the only art work that Michelangelo has
signed. No one believed he actually could create
something so beautiful, so he signed his art work
    just to prove it.

16
Da Vinci
  • The Last Supper
  • This picture is Jesus with his disciples the
    night before his crucifixion.

17
Vitruvian Man
  • This is also another one of Da Vincis works of
art also showing his talent through the detailed
    muscles in the body.

18
Our Favorite Piece
  • The name of this art work is The Last Judgment
created by Michelangelo. It is a mural that is
part of the Sistine Chapel. We picked this as our
favorite piece because it shows how realistic all
of the paintings were and how talented the people
    were.
