8Key points for the voice backbone
- Determine no. of channels in a link I.e. users
to be serviced between two wiring closets - Leave min. 30 buffer in pair count and
termination hardware. - Follow appropriate termination and handling
practices for outdoor cables.

CATV SYSTEM CABLING DISTRIBUTION
12Key points for the CATV Network
- The CATV System works on the concept of Frequency
Multiplexing over Broadband carrier (as against
Baseband in Data). - It is Analog Broadband.
- The frequency spectrum used by CATV system is
from 33 MHz to 750 MHz, with a 7 MHz gap between
channels, called Guard Band. - As CATV signals are much less sensitive to noise,
copper is an effective medium for distribution in
small networks (upto 5 km radial distribution). - The Backbone run can be extended by adding
Amplifiers in series, upto 7-8 quality broadband
amplifiers can be cascaded in a single run.
13Key points for the CATV Network
- USE OF FIBER IN CATV NETWORK Fiber cable is
typically used in large, commercial MAN
(Metropolitan Area Networks) CATV systems. - Hybrid Amplifiers used.
- Can be used in Campus network to share media and
optimise costs. - NOTE The CATV access is mostly in the
residential Staff Colony area and with a few
points to Guest House, Club House and Hostel.
14Distribution in the CATV Network
- Bus wiring
- Important to maintain signal integrity uptil the
end point - Variable losses High Frequencies have higher
losses - Use of Slope Amplifiers to provide variable
gain to bandwidth. - Use of Tap Offs and Splitters to branch Trunk
routes and service end points.
15CATV Components
- HEAD END / CONTROL ROOM (OR FEED)
- Dish Antennae with LNB
- Power Dividers
- Satellite Receivers as per no. of simultaneous
channels required - A/V Frequency Modulators as per total no. of
simultaneous channel broadcast on the network - Channel Mixer / Combiner
- Head End Broadband Amplifier
- DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
- Distribution broadband amplifiers
- RG-11 coaxial cable for main distribution
- RG-6 coaxial cable for residential cabling
- Tap offs / splitters as required.
