Title: Distributing Authorware

1
  • Distributing Authorware
  • via CD
  • via the WWW

2
Packaging Authorware for a CD
Packaging a piece converts it to the format that
you distribute. You don't need Authorware to run
a packaged piece, but you do need a run-time
application to play it. The run-time application
can be distributed separately from the piece, or
it can be part of the packaged piece.
3
Package the File
  • Open the piece and any connected libraries you
    want to package.
  • Choose File gt Package.
  • Set the Package options in the dialog box.
  • Click Save File(s) Package.
  • Type a name for the packaged file, and click
    Save.

4
Without Runtime
Without Runtime Select this option if you know
your users will have access to the run-time
application, which is required to run your piece.
Also select this option if you intend to
web-package a piece. The file format produced is
filename.a5r
  • Runtime files
  • Runa5w16.exe or Runa5w32.exe

5
For Windows 3.1
For Windows 3.1 - Select this option to include
the Authorware run-time application in the file
so that it can run by itself on computers using
Windows 3.1.
File Format created is filename.exe
6
For Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT
For Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT Select this
option to include the Authorware run-time
application in the Authorware file so that it can
run by itself on computers using Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows 2000, but not
on computers using Windows 3.1.
File Format created is filename.exe
7
Additional Files
A piece typically consists of not only the
Authorware file that contains the flowline but
also external files, Xtras, scripting Xtras, and
DLLs that the Authorware file may use.
Fonts
On Windows computers, make sure the font files
are installed in the system's Fonts folder. Users
need to restart their computers before the fonts
are available. If you can't make sure that the
fonts you want to use will get installed on
users' computers, stick with standard system
fonts.
8
Xtras
Xtras can't be packaged with a piece. You need to
distribute them as separate files. The Xtra files
need to be placed in an Xtras folder inside the
folder that contains the Authorware run-time
application.
9
Movie Drivers
Authorware needs an external driver to run
digital video files in a packaged Authorware
piece. The necessary driver files must be placed
in the same folder as Authorware, the Authorware
runtime application (Runa5w32.exe or
Runa5w16.exe), or an Authorware piece packaged
with the runtime application.

10
Shockwave
Shockwave technology lets you package an
Authorware piece especially for the WEB. Files
are delivered over the Internet and run through a
WEB browser.
11
Authorware tutorials may also be embedded with
other links so the student has an overall picture.
12
Shocking an Authorware piece
  • 1. Package the Authorware piece without Runtime.
  • Make sure the Authorware file and its library
    files have unique names.
  • Choose File gt Package.
  • Select Without Runtime in the Package dialogue
    box.
  • Select the other options you want, then click
    Save File(s) Package.

14
Use Web Packager to shock the packaged piece.
  • Web Packager located in Authorware 5 directory,
    application is called ab32a.
  • Web Packager segments an Authorware piece,
    producing two types of files
  • One or more segment files (extension AAS), each
segment containing a compressed section of the
    piece
  • One map file (extension AAM), which contains
information the Authorware plug-in needs to
retrieve each segment and to retrieve external
files used with your piece, such as movies and
    UCDs.

15
Start Web Packager.
16
In the Select Destination Map File dialog box,
indicate where you want the map file to be
placed. Authorware will place the segment files
in the same location. Click Save.
17
Select a segment size and segment name, click OK.
18
Use a text editor to add the shocked piece to a
web page.
To add a shocked Authorware piece to an HTML
page, use the HTML tag EMBED. This specifies
the location of the piece and a rectangle within
the page where the piece will be displayed. The
EMBED tag for a shocked Authorware piece looks
like this ltEMBED SRC"mypiece.aam" WIDTH640
HEIGHT480 WINDOWonTop PALETTEBackgroundgt
19
Use the WINDOW argument to specify how the
browser displays the piece.
There are three options inPlace Displays the
piece embedded within the HTML page in the
browser window. You can use inPlace only in
Windows. onTop Displays the piece in a separate
window on top of the browser window. This makes
your piece look more like a separate
application. onTopMinimize Displays the piece in
a separate window and minimises (or hides) the
browser. This setting makes your piece look the
most like a separate, stand-alone application.

Shockwave Plug-ins
To enable Authorware projects to be viewed over
the World Wide Web through a browser, you must
acquire the appropriate plug-in. The plug-in for
Authorware is Web Player, the plug-in for
Director is also called Shockwave so be careful
!!!!.
