What is Independence Day?
  • It commemorates the birthday of the United States
    of America
  • It is a federal holiday (as of 1941) honoring the
    adoption of the Declaration of Independence on
    July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the
    Kingdom of Great Britain.

  • I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated
    by succeeding generations as the great
    anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated
    as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of
    devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be
    solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows,
    games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and
    illuminations, from one end of this continent to
    the other, from this time forward for evermore.

    A home and a country should leave us no more?
    Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's
    pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and
    slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of
    the grave And the star-spangled banner in
    triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and
    the home of the brave.
  • Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
    Between their loved homes and the war's
    desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the
    heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath
    made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we
    must, for our cause it is just, And this be our
    motto "In God is our trust." And the
    star-spangled banner forever shall wave O'er the
    land of the free and the home of the brave!

Declaration of Independence
  • We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
    all men are created equal, that they are endowed
    by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
    that among these are Life, Liberty, and the
    pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these
    rights, Governments are instituted among Men,
    deriving their just powers from the consent of
    the governed. That whenever any Form of
    Government becomes destructive of these ends, it
    is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish
    it, and to institute new Government, laying its
    foundation on such principles and organizing its
    powers in such form, as to them shall seem most
    likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

  • In April 1775 as the King's troops advanced on
    Concord Massachusetts Paul Revere would sound the
    alarm that "The British are coming, the British
    are coming" as he rode his horse through the late
    night streets.
  • The battle of Concord and its "shot heard round
    the world" would mark the unofficial beginning of
    the colonies war for Independence.

  • An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all
    that is left us.  But we shall not fight our
    battle alone.  There is a just God that presides
    over the destinies of nations.  The battle, sir,
    is not of the strong alone.  Is life so dear or
    peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of
    chains and slavery?  Forbid it almighty God.  I
    know not what course others may take, but as for
    me, give me liberty, or give me death.
  • It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too
    often that this great nation was founded not by
    religionists, but by Christians not on religion,
    but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  For that
    reason alone, people of other faiths have been
    afforded freedom of worship here.

    habits that lead to political prosperity, our
    religion and morality are the indispensable
    supporters.  Let us with caution indulge the
    supposition that morality can be maintained
    without religion.  Reason and experience both

    can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
