The parts of a computer that you can see
3A computer has many parts.
When you put all the parts together, you have a
computer.

The CPU is the brains of the computer
This is a tower CPU

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit
Dont worry about what it means. Just remember CPU

This is a desktop CPU because it usually sits
on a desk.
The power button lights up when the computer is on
Always let AN ADULT push the power button for you!

We should always CLOSE using this button too!
This button OPENS the CD drive
CD drive
If we CLOSE it by pushing the drawer in, we can
damage the CD drive.
8Monitor
The monitor lets you see information.
The information shows up on the monitor screen.
Derby Ridge Elementary School is located in
Columbia, MO.
The information could be in words or pictures
or both.
The power light tells you if the monitor is on or
off.
9This is a Login screen
- The flashing black line is called a cursor.
- It shows where your characters will go when you
type.
A character can be a letter, number, or symbol.
Here are some examples of characters

The box or space where you will type is called a
field
This is the Username field.
This is the Password field.

is your Student ID number.
Thats the number you use to get lunch in the
cafeteria and to check out books in the library.

Tab, not Enter, to move your cursor to the
Password field

- The desktop
- is what you see
- on your
- monitor screen when you first log in
- to your computer.

Like the top of a real desk,
the computer desktop has things on it that you
use often.

Some of the things you will use most often are
the Start button, (down in the left corner)
Network Applications (the white box with a red
stripe on top),
and Internet Explorer (the blue e).

- The pictures on the desktop that you double-click
to open a program are called icons.
20Task bar
- The task bar runs across the bottom of the
desktop.
The word task means job.
The task bar shows all the programs (or jobs)
that you have open.
21- When you are using a program, that button on the
task bar looks like it is pushed in.
If you want to change to another program, just
click its button on the task bar.
22Now you are in a different program. Clicking on
its button on the task bar took you right to
that program.

Thats crazy! When you want to tell the
computer to STOP, you click the START button?

- when you want to
- open a program,
log off, or shut down
the computer.

The pointer can have many different shapes.
You can also call it a cursor, or an arrow.

- The hourglass
- shows up on the monitor screen after you click on
something.
It tells you that a program is opening, so be
patient and wait!

You use a mouse to open or start programs
(click or double-click),
You also use the mouse to move objects on the
monitor screen.

It is scooted up on the mouse so the fingers can
reach the buttons.

The left-click button is the button we almost
ALWAYS use.

finger (or pointer).

When we click it twice, we say DOUBLE-CLICK.

If we do use it, we will say right-click

The scroll wheel allows you to scroll up or down
the screen or page.
