Or Or Everything you ever wanted to
know about a speech referral but were afraid to
ask!

Who Do I Refer?

• Speech Language Pathologists in the public
  schools provide therapy to qualifying students
  with difficulties in the following areas

• Articulation
• Receptive and Expressive Language
• Fluency (stuttering)
• Voice or resonance
• Pragmatics (social use of language)

How Do I Begin?
Ill come in during reading and listen to her!

• Communicate with the SLP(T)
• Communicate with parent(T)
• Observation and/or screening(SLP)
• Fail screening referral proceeds
• Pass screening note home by SLP and process
  stops

What happens next?

• Fill out DEC 1 referral form (T)
• Participate in meeting with parent and SLP to
  sign DEC1 and DEC 2(T)
• Student is now ready for evaluation (SLP)

Testing and beyond

• Student is tested (SLP)
• Communication between SLP and teacher to discuss
  results and establish goals (if qualify)
• Share any relevant information based on classroom
  assessment and observation (T)
• Meet with parent, LEA representative and SLP to
  discuss evaluation results with parents and
  proceed with paperwork if student qualified (T)

Therapy Begins, Now what?

• Therapy is scheduled (SLP) and students begins
  right away
• Continue dialogue between SLP and teacher about
  areas of need, brainstorming, utilization of
  resources, progress noted
• Remember the other 29 hours!!
