15Digitization Policy Guidelines
- Materials to be digitized must be in the public
domain or clear for public distribution and must
support the educational, recreational and
information needs of its users - Priority is given to current and retrospective
materials on or about the Philippines (history,
psychology, economic and political conditions,
legal materials, recreation, education, arts and
culture, languages and literature, and natural
as well as physical sciences)
16Digitization Policy Guidelines
- Deteriorating and fragile materials, such as rare
books, which contain invaluable information - Materials that will contribute most immensely to
increased production of ordinary citizens such as
farmers, fisher folk, etc. - Unique resources pertaining to local heritage
especially oral traditions/dying traditions and
customs which are of interest to the local

62Usage Statistics
63The Philippine eLib
- has demonstrated integration of information
sources into a single network system critical
mass - decreased over all cost through cooperative
development and enhancement and sharing of
resources - accelerated delivery of services to citizenry
- increased capacity to make systematic use of
information for a wide range of purposes.
64The Philippine eLib
- Implementing the eLib, we in the Philippines
realized two concerns - Acquisition of most, if not all, Filipiniana
cultural heritage materials in any format - Preservation and conservation of these heritage
materials/traditional knowledge - Increased readership that includes not only
clients of the members of the consortium but also
ordinary people, farmers, fisher folk and
students in both public and private secondary and
tertiary levels of education. - We would like to think, that through the
University Librarys website and the Phil eLib,
we continue to contribute to the social and
economic empowerment of our people.
65Conclusion
- It is imperative to preserve heritage materials/
information resources covering culture and the
historical events in our respective nations and
use modern information and communication
technologies (ICTs) in the organization, access
and preservation of national heritage materials
in realizing the national vision for social and
economic empowerment of its constituents.
