Title: CLIVAR and Carbon Potential for Collaboration

1
CLIVAR and Carbon - Potential for Collaboration
  • Katy Hill Howard Cattle
  • International CLIVAR Project Office
  • Southampton Oceanography Centre
  • University of Southampton, UK

2
CLIVAR - primary objective
  • To describe and understand the physical processes
    responsible for climate variability and
    predictability on seasonal, interannual, decadal,
    and centennial time-scales, through the
collection and analysis of observations and the
development and application of models of the
coupled climate system, in cooperation with other
    relevant climate-research and observing
    programmes.

3
CLIVAR requirements for hydrographic resurvey
  • CLIVAR has identified the need for a reoccupation
of a subset of the hydrographic sections that
    formed the WHP to
  • Refine WOCE determinations of oceanic heat
    freshwater transports
  • Document decadal and shorter period ocean changes
  • Provide monitoring of variability and change in
    the ocean
  • Provide data for model validation and
    initialisation

4
CLIVAR - carbon context
  • JSC/WCRP mandate for CLIVAR to take up the
objective of understanding the role of the ocean
in climate and long term ocean variability
    post-WOCE
  • Role of CLIVAR in the IGBP-IHDP-WCRP Joint
    Global Carbon Cycle Project
  • Increasing need for climate models to represent
the carbon cycle for prediction of climate
    variability and change

5
WOCE/JGOFS Ocean Transport Workshop follow-up
  • The WOCE/JGOFS Ocean Transport Workshop made a
strong recommendation for collaboration among the
CLIVAR and international carbon communities, in
particular in the context of repeat WOCE
    sections.
  • Follow-up meeting at the IGBP Open Science
    Conference
  • As a result
  • ICPO established a Web Page on which to post
details of planned (and past) occupation of
    sections for hydrography carbon.
  • Need for an ad hoc panel identified (status?)

CLIVAR/Carbon collaboration opportunities
  • Through CLIVARs Ocean Basin Panels (each of
which is identifying/has identified an ocean
carbon representative) and through the CLIVAR
    OOP, in providing scientific focus
  • Encouraging submission of information to a
    Carbon/Hydrographic Section Web page (currently
on line on the CLIVAR Home Pages).
  • Through ICPO assistance with joint meetings,
    workshops etc.
  • By helping to provide the physical context for
    ocean carbon measurements
  • By actively exploring cross cutting issues
between CLIVAR and the ocean carbon community
(for example in relation to anthropogenic climate
    change)

9
CLIVAR/carbon - issues
  • How do we best coordinate the inventory of repeat
    hydrography/carbon hydrographic sections and what
is the best home for this?
  • WOCE set stringent standards for data through the
WHP Manual. This may need revision/updating -
how is this best achieved and by whom?
  • CLIVAR is giving attention to repeat
hydrography/carbon but little to near surface CO2
activities as yet (issue for CLIVAR)
  • How do the carbon ocean observation activities
    (this workshop, the wider ocean
    biogeochemistry/IGBP oceans activity, the
IGBP-IHDP-WCRP Global Carbon Project and the
needs of e.g the IPCC modelling community fit
    together?
