global economy, a country like ours may need only
half a million of those unskilled men and women.
Right now we have nine million highly skilled
jobs, and by 2020 we will need 14 million five
million more with the skills that are necessary
to meet the occupational opportunities available.
And at the same time, a 90 decline in unskilled
jobs.. (The Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Prime

- Mrs. N. Leese
17Skills areas
- There are 3 skill areas in English which are
assessed - Speaking and listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Therefore it is likely that your child levels
fluctuate as they are assessed on each of the
skills.
18English SATs
- Your child will take three tests in May
- Reading
- Writing
- Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet)
- From this they will get one level which range
from levels 4-7. It is worth noting that they do
not get assessed on Speaking and Listening in the
SATs.
19Assessment Focuses
- Your child will be assessed on 8 separate
skills in reading and writing. - For example
- AF2 Understand, describe, select or retrieve
information, events or ideas from texts and use
quotation and reference to text READING - AF2 Produce texts which are appropriate to task,
reader and purpose WRITING
20What can I do to help?
- Use the assessment focuses in the back of your
childs book to see where they are and what they
need to do to move on - Encourage them to develop a reading habit
provide them with a quiet place with no
distractions to do so - Discuss what they are reading, ask questions
about it - Read their homework through, ask questions,
discover whether they understand the purpose of
the task and the audience it is being written for
21What can I do to help?
- If they have an extended piece of writing,
discuss it with them, help them plan it before
actually beginning the task - Encourage good speaking and listening grades by
initiating discussions, ask them to explain their
answers, encourage new words
22 23Skills areas
- There are 4 skill areas in Maths which are
assessed - Number
- Algebra
- Data Handling
- Shape, Space and Measures
- Therefore it is likely that your childs
levels will fluctuate as they progress through
the year.
24Maths SATs
- Your child will take three tests in May
- Non calculator paper
- Calculator paper
- Mental Arithmetic
-
- From this they will get one level which ranges
from level 3 to level 8.
25Banding changes
- Last year we achieved our best SAT results to
date, including a record number of level 8s for
the school. - This was helped by reducing class sizes in year 9
by changing 6 bands into 7.This enables your
child to be taught within a smaller class gaining
more individual teacher time. - This year we have done the same. So although both
you and your child may think they have gone down
a band they havent really.
26Levels
- Each pupil will be given a double sided A4 sheet
with descriptions of the levels for each of the
four areas. These should be kept at the back of
their exercise book. You can use these to monitor
your childs performance and to discuss their
learning. - At the front of their exercise book they will
have details of previous levels and the target
that they are aiming for this year.
27What can I do to help?
- Use the level descriptors in the back of your
childs book to see where they are and what they
need to do to further their progress - Discuss their learning, asking questions about it
- Discuss their homework, asking questions about it
- Ensure that they have the correct mathematical
equipment for lessons and the SAT exams
especially a calculator

learn independently. - Helps students to choose subjects in their

- Level 5 Apply knowledge to less familiar
situations, start to use models - Level 6 use models and theories to explain why
things happen - Level 7 Link areas of Science together

articles - Explore the Science behind common phenomena
