Commemorative Celebration
- Wednesday, January 16 the 20th Annual Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration will
take place at 1100 a.m. at Ruby Diamond
Auditorium. - The Commemorative Celebration features keynote
speaker Mr. Vernon Wall. Vernon Wall is a senior
consultant with the Washington Consulting Group
and co-founder of the Social Justice Training
Institute. - The program entails a combination of artistic
performances, including spoken word, dance,
singing and interpretive dance, all in keeping

9International Dissertation Semester Research
Fellowship
- The Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to
announce the International Dissertation Semester
Research Fellowship. - The new fellowship program is for advanced
doctoral students to help facilitate research and
the timely completion of their doctoral degree
that requires extended research-time abroad. - Eligible graduate students will be able to access
the application and criteria information on the
OGS website in a few weeks. - The deadline for submission of the folders to the
Office of Graduate Studies is January 18, 2008.

- FSU Dialogues sponsored by Congress of Graduate

applications for the first FSU Dialogues
Conference that will take place in the Spring of
2008. - Dialogues is designed to recognize
interdisciplinary research by graduate students
and promote its recognition internationally.
Each year the interdisciplinary focus of the

Studies (CERPS) has joined 32 other leading
university education research centers from 23
different states as a new member of the Education
Policy Alliance (EPA). - The alliance membership includes centers located
at many of the country's top universities,
including Stanford, Columbia and the University
of Pennsylvania. This national consortium
promotes collaborative research efforts across
its member centers, and is committed to the

- Presentation Title Boarding Schools and Capital
Benefits A Comparative Analysis of United States
and South African Schools - Summary A major focus of her research is in
seeking answers for problems in urban education.
According to Bourdieu, students who have greater
exposure to social and cultural capital
experience higher levels of achievement in
school. In this study, she looks at the boarding
school environment for evidence of increased
opportunity for social, cultural, and education
capital. She then discusses how urban student
could benefit from the boarding school
environment, and how the factors that increase
the capitals could be transferred into
traditional public schools. -

Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 data in a
multi-level model to answer the following

as family background interact with high school
demographic composition in determining a
student's college-going outcomes through the
promotion of educational aspiration, academic
preparation, and actual enrollment?

five-dimension definition of civic responsibility
in higher education and details a qualitative
study of civic responsibility at two research
universities
19Personal Finance Study An examination of
personal finance activities leading to wealth
accumulation.
- Dr. David Eccles and his fellow researchers are
in need of households to take part in a pilot
study looking at activities related to personal
finance. This study is being financed by a grant
through the Financial Industrys Regulatory
Authority Investor Education Foundation. - The data collected will be used to provide
personal finance interventions. They are looking
for married couples in their 50s to participate. - For more information regarding the qualifications

anxiety reduction, academic consultation and
study skills.
21Night Nole
- During the fall, Night Nole provides students
with a safe ride home from the Tennessee Strip
and other late-night venues. - The SGA funds this no-fare transit service
through a contract with Tallahassee. The route is
within a short walking distance of many apartment
complexes where students live.
