Title: GANT Y3 Technical Roadmap

1
GÉANT Y3 Technical Roadmap
  • TF-NGN
  • Roberto Sabatino
  • Budapest, 17-18 October 2002
  • (stolen from GEANT review.)

2
GÉANT Y3 Technical Roadmap
  • Technology
  • Network monitoring
  • Services

3
Technology
  • IPv6
  • Optical developments
  • Router testing

4
IPv6
  • Continue to operate and extend IPv6 overlay
  • add Hitachi router to form dual star topology
  • add connection to Abilene
  • Native IPv6 on GEANT, in dual stack fashion
  • static routing by Autumn 2002, in co-operation
    with ARNES and REDIRIS
  • dynamic routing by summer 2003, with network
    management tools
  • NRENs will be encouraged to connect to and use
    pilot IPv6 service on GEANT
  • From pilot to full service during Y4

5
Optical technology
  • Benefits of and issues with 40Gbps (and beyond)
  • Benefits of and issues with OOO
  • Capacity management options
  • packet based vs. circuit based
  • granularity, scalability, reach, coverage
  • Integrated IP/optical network control (G-MPLS)
  • Feasibility of alternative service model with
    carriers (managed international fibre)
  • Goal to be as good as we are with IP!

6
Router Testing
  • Test programme with Alcatel (A7770)
  • Interest in Avici TSR, Juniper T640 and others
  • Lab testing followed by field trials

7
Network Monitoring
  • Deployment of multi-domain infrastructure to
    monitor quality of the network
  • basic network quality performance
  • performance of different Classes of Service
  • by summer 2003
  • DANTE, PL, NO, UK, CH, IT, IE
  • Guidelines for establishment of Performance
    Response Team
  • by autumn 2003
  • DANTE, IT, CH, UK, IE,CZ

8
Services
  • Creation of multi-vendor testbed
  • Enhance Multicast
  • Enhance Premium IP
  • Supporting projects

9
Multivendor testbed
  • Services to be deployed on GEANT and NRENs of
    increasing complexity and number
  • Need to perform thorough testing in a laboratory
environment prior to trials on production
    networks
  • For development of GEANT and NRENs
  • Juniper, Cisco, Smartbits, Unix systems
    interconnected via a layer-2 VPN using MPLS/CCC
    techniques

10
Multicast enhancements
  • Single Source Multicast
  • simplifies interdomain operation of multicast
  • increases reliability (spring 2003)
  • Per-Group Monitoring (summer 2003)
  • High capacity streams (100Mbps) (autumn 2003)
  • IPv6 multicast
  • DANTE, FR, CZ, DE, PL, UK

11
Premium IP enhancements
  • Web-based user interface for collection of
    requests
  • Automated resource allocation
  • scheduled events
  • one-time events
  • Router configuration management
  • summer 2003
  • DANTE, GR, UK, PL

12
Supporting Projects
  • More in depth understanding of user groups
    requirements
  • high capacity BE,
  • Premium IP,
  • L2 VPN
  • wavelengths
  • 6NET, ATRIUM, JIVE, FAIN
  • Engage in technical discussions with user groups
    and provide solutions
  • DANTE, IT

13
Infrastructure to support projects
  • Projects may require special treatment, which
can be very difficult in our multi-domain env.
  • GEANT and NRENs do not offer the same types of
    service (mpls/ccc, Premium, LBE)
  • Access to GEANT for projects via NRENs
  • Technical benefits if projects use different
    access
  • Balance management of network (and recover costs)
with promoting use of GEANT by projects

14
Project Access Options
  • Dedicate a GE port for each NREN
  • only possible where we have a PoP
  • Use NREN backup port for projects access
  • Projects supported through main access
  • GEANT covers cost of GEANT access ports, NRENs
cover own costs plus additional access circuit.

15
Access policies
  • NREN authorises use of access to GEANT from
    projects
  • Projects must not use the port in a
    production-like mode
  • if they do, they must upgrade their access
  • ports will be monitored, NRENPC will decide if
    utilisation is production-like.
  • idea of 10 average, less than 50 peak

16
External projects
  • Outside NREN community
  • NRENPC must approve use of GEANT
  • where possible use NREN projects access..
  • .otherwise access charge to project
