students who demonstrate high INVOLVEMENT, create
positive EXPERIENCES throughout the Aggie
community, IMPACT student life at Texas AM and
enhance the Aggie SPIRIT.

The Legacy - Richard Buck Weirus 42
  • Executive Director of The Association of
    Former Students 1964-1980
  • Initiation of the Presidents Endowed Scholarship
  • Establishment of the Century Club
  • Support of Student Involvement
  • Personally presented each award
    until his death in 1997.

The Background
  • Recognizes up to 55 students yearly up to
  • 5 Level 1 students
  • 10 Level 2 students
  • 15 Level 3 students
  • 20 Level 4 students
  • 5 Level 5 students
  • Recipients will be honored at the
  • All University Awards Ceremony
  • on Sunday, April 19, 2009.

The Background
  • The award is financed and processed by
  • The Association of Former Students and the
    Department of Student Activities.
  • The Houston AM Club has established a
  • 25,000 endowment.

The Award Criteria
  • In good academic and disciplinary standing with
    the university
  • Minimum 2.25 GPR
  • Classification is based on the number of
    semesters youve been at Texas AM
  • You may only receive the Buck Weirus Spirit Award
    once

Classification System
  • Students will fall into one of five levels
  • Level 1- 1 completed undergraduate semester _at_
    TAMU
  • Level 2 2 or 3 completed undergraduate
    semesters _at_ TAMU
  • Level 3 4 or 5 completed undergraduate
    semesters _at_ TAMU
  • Level 4 6 completed undergraduate semesters _at_
    TAMU
  • Level 5 All graduate students

The Selection Process
  • Applications are reviewed by a confidential
    committee composed of faculty, staff and students
    appointed by the Buck Weirus Leadership Committee
  • Committee members do not know your biographical
    information at any point in the process.

  • Black Text
  • 8 ½ X 11
  • One page, front side only
  • Font must be one of the following Times New
    Roman, Ariel, Tahoma, or Helvetica
  • 10 point font or larger
  • Margins no less than 1 inch
  • No images, colors, borders or backgrounds
  • DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME
  • If your name appears on the Activities Sheet,
    your application may be disqualified.

Activities Sheet
  • Wording should be clear and concise, listing
    activities in descending yearly order beginning
    with the current academic year 2008-2009
  • Do not list activities based only on academic
    achievement you should however list leadership
    roles held in academic organizations and your
    contributions within those positions
  • List all activities and honors from Texas AM and
    other TAMU Branch Campuses (Galveston Qatar)
  • Graduate/Professional Students - Only list
    activities from Graduate or Professional school

What to Avoid on the Activities Sheet?
  • Experiences from outside Texas AM are not given
    any weight, for example
  • High school involvement
  • Church involvement
  • Work experience is the exception the
    application includes a supplemental question that
    will ask you to indicate if you work(ed) and on
    average how many hours per week and your
    responsibilities.

Essay 150 Words
  • You will also have the opportunity to submit a
    150 word essay. You will build a case as to why
    you are an exemplary Aggie relative to the award
    criteria.
  • This is an opportunity for you to give your
    experiences depth by describing how you affect
    Aggieland.

Submission Process
  • Applications will only be accepted online at
    www.aggienetwork.com/buckweirus/
  • After submitting your application you will
    receive a confirmation email
  • Award notifications will be mailed to all
    applicants in early March
