  • Title V has given UNM Valencia the opportunity to
    make progress toward student success and
    retention.
  • Our two Title V grants Cooperating to Improve
    Rural Hispanic Student Success through
    Technology and Student Success through Teaching
    and Learning
  • We cooperate to achieve the same outcomes of
    empowering the campus by improving student
    success, retention and graduation rates.

  • Joint Venture between UNM-Valencia and UNM-Los
    Alamos campuses (Cooperative to improve Rural
    Hispanic Students Success through Technology).

  • Improving teaching and learning through faculty
    technology training,

    advising,

Title V Cohort Specifications
  • Baseline year (2003-2004) academic year.
  • Tracked for three years after the baseline year
  • Each year a new cohort will be identified,
    (2005-2006), (2006-2007), (2007-2008).
  • Cohorts consist of first time, full time, degree
    seeking, low income Hispanics who are receiving
    Pell grants.
  • Track and report retention percentages for the
    cohorts over the baseline year (2003 2004).
  • We must track and report three year completion
    transfer rates for the cohorts over the baseline
    (2003 2004).

Achievements
  • Establishing Teaching Learning Centers in both
    campuses
  • Provided technical and pedagogical support to 223
    faculty (UNM-V 173, UNM-LA 50) trained 172
    faculty (UNM-V 102, UNM-LA 70).
  • 92 of full-time faculty was trained. 75 of
    part-time faculty was trained.
  • Both Campuses have upgraded their technology
    infrastructures to assist in the increased use of
    instructional technology.
  • Both campuses classroom are now fully equipped
    with Audio/Video equipments.
  • Two Wireless networks (Valencia, Los Alamos).

Electronic Advising
  • Both campuses catalogs are now 100 encoded, but
    we are in the process of updating DARS encodings
    to keep it up-to-date.
  • The DARS system already integrated with UNM-Main
    Campus banner system under the name e-Progress.
  • Academic Advisors are using DARS with students
    they advise.
  • Title V Academic Advisors from both Los Alamos
    and Valencia meet occasionally to share ideas and
    strategies regarding student retention.

Measures
  • To increase the retention rate of Hispanic and
    low-income students by developing new teaching
    strategies, improving advisement through
    electronic degree audit, and improving
    assessment.
  • To increase the percentage of Hispanic and
    low-income students who transfer to four-year
    colleges.
  • To increase the percentage of Hispanic and
    low-income students who complete associate's
    degrees.
  • To increase student success through faculty
    training in classroom technology.

Institutional Researchers
  • Institutional researchers positions have been
    established in both campuses.
  • Cohort groups have been identified and tracking
    is in place for Valencia and Los Alamos campuses.
  • Advisors are working with students to encourage
    retention, completion and transfer to four year
    campuses.

Endowment
  • The targeted endowment is 180,000.
  • Total endowment funds for this grant to date are
    143,883.47. UNM-Los Alamos has a total of
    67,536.00. Both totals include some matched
    dollars from the Federal Government.
  • The endowment money will be used to establish
    scholarships for students

Motivation
  • If I didn't go to college right after high
    school, I knew that I would never want to go
    back. So might as well get it over with right
    away.
  • More job opportunities upon graduation, ability
    to do something that I love.
  • My son, I want to be able to give him what he
    wants. And I want to be able to support my
    family.
  • My main motivation was my parents. Being a
    registered nurse is not only my goal but my
    parents dream to see me succeed in what i want to
    do.

  • I would like someone to make sure that I am
    doing well in my classes and if there is anything
    I am missing in my classes. I would like my
    professors to send me anything that I might be
    missing.

    during my last months of pregnancy.
  • If somebody comes up to me and says hell yeah
    your still in college!!! awesome!!!
  • I think that this program and the school is
    doing a great job at keeping me in school right
    now.
