Title: Describe historical context of sciencetopractice agenda.

3Objectives
- Describe historical context of science-to-practice
agenda. - Identify current state of national movement
toward evidence-based practice. - Provide childrens model of transition to
positive system of change. - Engage in dialogue about organizational,
structural and sustaining issues/ideas that
impact on successful implementation of
evidence-based practices.
4Every time any American--whether a child or an
adult, a member of a majority or a minority, from
an urban or rural area --- comes into contact
with the mental health systems, he or she will
receive excellent care that is consistent with
our scientific understanding of what
works President's New Freedom Commission Report
5Promise to Parents You will have healthcare for
your child based on the best available scientific
knowledge. The health care system promises you
excellence as its standard. Care will not vary
illogically from doctor to doctor or from
provider to provider. You will have the health
care that can help you and avoid the care that
won't help you

8Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by session participants
- What research is being conducted to measure
effect of combination of evidence-based practices
for children and adolescents? - What are evidence-based practices for early
intervention through child/adolescent life cycle? - How do we ensure correct clinical assessment/
formulation for best evidence-based practices
fit? - What is the best measure for organizational
readiness? - How do we fund grants that foster innovation, but
at the same time, limit funding for pet
projects or small pilots that will not have a
system-wide impact? - How do we measure fidelity to system-of-care
(not just one EBP) as part of comprehensive
system of care.
9Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by panel for discussion purposes
- What priority areas would you like to have NRIs
CMHQA address? - What are some specific activities that would help
EBP implementation efforts in your state? - What would help you promote EBPs for childrens
services? - What are the best mechanisms to share information
on EBPs and EBP implementation across states? - How can CMHQA help your grant development
initiatives?
10Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by panel for discussion purposes
- Given the status of the uneven research base on
the various EBPs, and the challenges to
implementing even the strongest models, where
should current research activities be focused? - What are the largest gaps in constructing a
unified dissemination and implementation research
agenda? How can closer connections be made
between this research agenda and the overall
child strategic initiatives, again with the goal
of creating sustainable change? - Given the need to link these new initiatives both
horizontally and vertically (across all of the
child systems and from state policy to
practitioner and family-driven exercise of
choice) what are the most effective strategies
which states can undertake?
11Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by panel for discussion purposes
- How can states lead efforts to move EBPs into
systems while also encouraging evidence farming
- i.e., identification of promising practices
from the ground up? - The empirical evidence has generally not been
based on samples drawn across different cultures,
ethnic and racial groups, geographical locations
and/or socioeconomic class, so how do states
proceed to promote evidence-based practices in
light of these limitations? - What can science tell us about how to create and
promote culturally relevant services? Can
science help us know what we need to do? Is there
evidence that guides us on how to do this? - Does the current science help us to address the
needs of diverse populations and improve quality?
12Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by panel for discussion purposes
- To ensure that people get the most up-to-date,
effective services, what are special
considerations in delivering evidence-based
practices to differing cultures? What are the
elements of good clinical practice? - What changes are needed to promote this
customized care across the mental health system?
Consider the chain of effect systems category. - Cultural competence and evidence-based practices
are converging. There are standards in existence
from many state and federal entities. What needs
to happen to make customized care a reality?
13Science and Evidence-Based Practices
- How do we come to understand the meaning and
beliefs of consumers and how do we design a
system that is responsive in developing services
to meet those needs? - To what degree do racism and bias present a
critical barrier in promoting customized care? - What would it take to embed cultural relevance
throughout mental health practices? - What is the relationship between good clinical
practice and culturally relevant practice?
14Evidence-Based Practices Strategies for
Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care
Questions posed by panel for discussion purposes
- To what degree do racism and bias present a
critical barrier in promoting this rule? - What would it take to embed cultural relevance
throughout mental health practices? - What is the relationship between good clinical
practice and culturally relevant practice? - What changes are needed to promote a rule of
individualization across the mental health
system. Consider the chain of effect systems
category. - Cultural competence and evidence-based practices
are converging. There are standards in existence
from many state and federal entities. What needs
to happen to make individualization a reality?
