Early Life
  • Born January 1, 1752, in Philadelphia,
    Pennsylvania
  • Parents Samuel Griscom and Rebecca James
  • Siblings She was the 8th of 17 children
  • Schooling Friends Quaker School
  • Her father was a Quaker carpenter.
  • Her mother was a member of a Quaker merchant
    family.

Adulthood
  • After schooling, she met an upholsterer.
  • Career Seamstress who made flags. Betsy also was
    a business woman.
  • Her husband, John Ross, from New Jersey, was
    killed on January 21st, 1776. She then remarried
    twice.
  • Betsy had seven daughters Clarissa Sidney,
    Susannah, Rachel, Jane, Harriet, Zilah, and
    Elizabeth.
  • She took over her husbands shop after he died.

Importance During Revolution
  • Made the first American flag with stars and
    stripes.
  • Official flagmaker for the Pennsylvania Navy.
  • She was well recognized for her hard work.

Later Years
  • The flag design that Betsy made and sewed was
    adopted by Congress on June 14, 1777.
  • On January 30, 1836, at the age of 84, Betsy Ross
    died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Other Interesting Facts
  • William J. Canby wrote a paper about her in 1870.

    her in 1776. They asked her to make a flag.
  • Major Philadelphia bridge in her honor.
  • Betsy Ross was also known as Elizabeth Griscom.
