Title: MidHeliospheric Great Observatory MiHeGO

1
Mid-Heliospheric Great Observatory (MiHeGO)
Opportunity
  • Between April and November, 2007 Ulysses will
execute a fast latitude scan that will bring it
    within 0.4 AUs of Earth.
  • At the same time, the two STEREO spacecraft will
move away from Earth from 0.3 to 0.7 AUs in the
    ecliptic.
  • With WIND and ACE at the Earths L1 point, the
five spacecraft will form a unique 0.5-1 AU
tetrahedron ideal for the separation of time
and space variations and for the determination
of the large-scale geometry of solar wind
    structures.

Measurement Strategy
  • Treat the 5 spacecraft as a single great
    observatory by employing common metadata
    standards and developing data analysis
techniques that make full advantage of the
    unique formation.
  • Triangulation of IP shocks with radio
instrumentation from Ulysses, WIND and the two
    STEREO spacecraft.

Science Objectives
  • Determine the 3D geometry and internal
    structure of ICMEs/magnetic clouds and
    interplanetary shocks at 1 AU.
  • Determine the longitudinal and latitudinal
extent of energetic particle storms at 1 AU.
  • Determine the 3D shape of interplanetary shocks
in the inner heliosphere using radio
    triangulation.
  • Determine the structure of the ambient solar
wind on the 0.5-1 AU scale.

Technology Development
  • No new technologies required.
  • Spacecraft operations, command and control to
remain in individual spacecraft control and
    funding.
  • Calling for dedicated science proposal
opportunity for peer-reviewed grants that take
    advantage the unique spacecraft constellation.

Mid-Heliospheric Great Observatory (MiHeGO)
MiHeGO will determine the 1 AU distribution of
energetic particles and the large scale structure
of geo-effectivesolar wind transients using the
fortuitous alignment of Ulysses, WIND, ACE and
STEREO.
Relation to Exploration
  • MiHeGO will determine the radiation environment
in interplanetary space near 1 AU thus providing
    empirical design limits for future
    interplanetary exploration.
  • MiHeGO will determine the large scale structure
of interplanetary transients at 1 AU providing
necessary information to improve current space
    weather warning algorithms.

Relation to SSSC and SESD
  • By establishing the 1 AU characteristics of the
    interplanetary radiation environment and
transient geometry, MiHeGo will allow the
refinement of LWS Sentinels inner heliospheric
    science objectives.
  • MiHeGO will coexist with current solar remote
sensing missions (SOHO, TRACE, Solar-B, RHESSI)
enabling the study of connection between solar
phenomena and 1 AU solar wind transients, a key
    objective of SSSC.
