AP LIT/STYLE ANALYSIS

  • Style Analysis

PROMPT
  • The most important themes in literature are
sometimes developed in scenes in which a death or
deaths take place. Choose a novel or play and
write a well-organized essay in which you show
how a specific death scene helps to illuminate
the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid mere
    plot summary.

RUBRIC
  • 9-8 The writers of these well-written essays make
an effective selection of a particular scene in
which a death or deaths take place, showing
convincingly how that scene sheds light on the
larger meaning of the work as a whole. These
essays demonstrate how the author conveys the
implications of this death, through a variety of
devices such as point of view, selection of
detail, and diction. These essays need not be
flawless, but they nevertheless display the
writers resources in developing and sustaining
an argument. The best essays will demonstrate an
ability to write with clarity and sophistication,
    sometimes even with stylistic elegance.

PROMPT
  • Morally ambiguous characters- characters whose
    behavior discourages readers from identifying
them as purely evil or purely good - are at the
heart of many works of literature. Choose a
novel or play in which a morally ambiguous
character plays a pivotal role. Then write an
essay in which you explain how the character can
be viewed as morally ambiguous and why his or her
moral ambiguity is significant to the work as a
    whole. Avoid mere plot summary.

5
INTRO PARAGRAPH (THEME)
  • In East of Eden, the child-like simplicity of the
narrators philosophic tone contrasts with a tone
of foreboding throughout the novel, thus
highlighting the moral ambiguity of Cal Trask, a
young man who discovers that his free will, not
his heredity can determine the goodness or evil
in his choices.  Cal, a modern-day Cain, is torn
not only by the pain of parental rejection, but
also by his mothers belief that there is only
evil in the world. Even though Cal is responsible
for the events that lead to his brothers death,
Cal learns what every child must that he must
break away from his parents, and take control of
    his own moral destiny.
