2Women status in Kuwait General Overview
3 Education
- The first school for girls was opened in 1937.
140 girl students were enrolled to be taught by 5
female tutors. (Qibliya School) - In 1945-1946, there were 4 schools for girls.
- The first high school for girls was opened in
1954-1955. (Morqab High School) - The first scholarship was granted to a Kuwaiti
female in 1954, to enable her to finish her high
school in Cairo-Egypt.
4 Kuwait University
- Kuwait University was established in October
1966, five years after Kuwait became an
independent state. - College of Engineering and Petroleum was
established in December 4, 1974. - Female students had the chance to study in all
disciplines offered by Kuwait university.
5 Political Status
- The women right to vote and run for office was
granted in May,16 2005 - The first female cabinet minister was appointed
in June, 2005 - In June 2005, Two women were appointed to the
Municipal council. - Kuwaiti women, who participated in election for
the first time in June 2006, as both voters and
candidates, failed to win any seats. (28 Kuwaiti
women candidates had stood in the elections ).
6 Economical Status
- Kuwaiti women own the same land and property
rights as Kuwaiti men. - Obvious contribution of Kuwaiti women is
noticed in the economy of Kuwait.

- Granting women the full political rights improved
the presence of women in engineering NGOs. - Still the percentage is marginal and the mission
is to be fulfilled. - The importance of women presence in Engineering
NGOs must be highlighted , and efforts must be
paid towards active women participation in
Engineering NGOs.
