Title: White River FootballParentPlayer Meeting2008
1White River Football?Parent/Player Meeting?2008
2Program Philosophy
- The White River Coaching Staff believes that it
is our job is to structure the most efficient and
productive football program in the 3A SPSL. We
believe the coaches need to be leaders. Our
student athletes should know that they can rely
on their coaches for guidance and assistance in
all areas, not just football. Each player will be
treated equally as a human first, student second,
and athlete third. - PERSON- We believe the most important skills our
players learn are Life Skills. We want to
prepare them for college, or the work force in
the world that lies ahead of them. We believe in
developing productive members of society who will
work together and ultimately thrive on the field
and in life.
3Program Philosophy
- STUDENT- Effort in the classroom should be the
players number one priority. As a staff we will
support the student athlete in those academic
endeavors they face in their High School career.
Players are student-athletes and should be held
accountable as such by Parents, Teachers,
Coaches, and individually. When a student-athlete
chooses to not hold a high academic standard they
are not letting only (their self) down, but also
the team. - ATHLETE- We expect each athlete and coach to give
their best effort. Anything less is choosing
mediocrity. Champions choose to push themselves
and develop into a better athlete by doing the
little things that are necessary outside of the
daily structure of the program. It is not what
youre doing in front of the coach that counts,
as much as what you are doing, when the coach is
not watching.
4Football Philosophy
- The White River Football Program will be based on
four Parameters - 1. Goal Setting This will be broken into 4
areas. - Team- What I can do to help the team move
forward. - Skills and Systems - What I need to do, to make
myself a better football player. - Fitness - Outside of team conditioning, little
things that will push me farther in my
conditioning. - Mental -Winning Attitude These are goals,
which will make my mental toughness an attribute,
not a detriment. This will be paramount to this
program.
5Its Going To Be Because Of Me
I am only oneBut I am oneI cant do
everythingBut I can do somethingAnd that which
I can doI ought to doAnd that which I ought to
doBy Gods Grace I shall doIM ONLY AS BIGAS
MY CHALLENGE
6Football Philosophy
- 2. Technique We want people who will learn and
believe in what they have been taught. We want to
make the opponent adjust to our strengths! - 3. Coach-ability We want players who are willing
to give of themselves for the team. If you cannot
fit into the system with integrity and humility,
you are letting your teammates down.
7Football Philosophy
- 4. Motivation- We want young men who are
motivated and who will relentlessly pursue
success both on and off the field. We are honored
to play this great game and no matter what the
outcome is, we will play every down to the best
of our ability. Football is a privilege, not a
given right.
8Coaching Philosophy
- A coachs duty, above and beyond all else, is to
provide opportunities for each athlete to reach
his potential as a complete individual. This
means creating avenues for success on the field
as well as off the field. An athlete must be a
better competitor, individual and teammate when
he walks off of the field than when he walked on
the field. An effective coach can only do this if
he is an effective teacher and leader. - Fundamentals of any sport must be stressed, but I
believe that the philosophy he learns in football
can be taken into other phases of his life. I
want all of our athletes to become fine
ballplayers, but more than that, I want them to
become excellent people and be better prepared to
take their place in life as a result of playing
football.
9Integrity
- Teamwork
- Commitment
- Enthusiasm
- Honesty
- Desire
- Organization
- Love
- Fun
- Confidence
- Selflessness
- Achievement
- Character
- Courage
- Discipline
10Expectations of Players
- White River Football program has established
itself as a hard hitting, physical, and
respectable team. This was started years ago and
will continue into the future. The key to all of
this will be DISCIPLINE. Discipline is the key to
a great athletic program. Discipline is the fuel
that allows common young men to achieve uncommon
goals. - Every one of us is different, that is what makes
us so unique. But, there is one thing that we all
have time. What we choose to do with this time
is what sets us apart from those individuals who
choose to be average. It is of utmost importance
that you get your priorities straight Person,
Student, Athlete.
11Team Rule.
- Dont let down your teammates!
- This is something to live by! When doing
something ask yourself- Will I be letting down my
teammates. In order for us to be successful we
all need to be headed in the same direction.
12Player Responsibility
- You have an obligation to your team. We want
young men with great character not those who act
like a character. Maintain pride and class at all
times. People will judge our program by our
behavior, so always act like a champion.
13Player Responsibility
- As a Hornet football player you are to be a
Servant-Warrior. This means that we help and
serve one and another. It is the responsibility
of the older players to be a role model for the
younger players. You are all special people who
want to belong to an elite group, the Hornet
Football Team. You must accept the fact that you
must make certain sacrifices to be dedicated to
making the White River Hornets the best they can
be.
14 A Champion inspires his team/ teammates to play
harder, more intensely, by his example. He walks
his talk. A Champion is interested in learning
all he can, mastering all his skills and
responsibilities acquiring every characteristic
that helps him gain the edge.
- It is your responsibility to become the very best
you can become. Do not accept less than the best
effort (BEST SHOT) from yourself or your
teammates.
15Practices
- We believe that enthusiasm, hustle, and
encouragement from each of you are vital for the
team moral. We all have good and bad days.
However, for practice, we must put aside those
issues and come ready to practice. Always be up
for practice! - Be at practice! Unexcused absences result in
missed games or removal from the team.
16Lettering at White River
- Offensive or Defensive starter for a minimum of
three games. - Special teams starter in five games.
- Play in one-half of all quarters. A quarter
consists of two consecutive plays. - Special consideration at coachs discretion (i.e.
potential letter-winner who is injured but comes
to all practices and games)
17Playing Time
- Performance of the individual players will decide
the outcome of who gets on the field. - Each player will be evaluated over his
performance and overall commitment to the team - The coachs responsibility is to put the best
players on the field to give the team the best
chance to play at an extremely high level
18Playing Time
- Varsity The varsity team is made up of those
players, in the coachs view, who are the best
available football players. Playing time on
Varsity depends on the players skill level and
readiness to play the game. All things being
equal the player who has a made a greater
commitment to the program will receive more
playing time. - Fact Only eleven players from each team can be
on the field at a time. At the VARSITY level it
is our best against their best. Some will play
and some wont but all are part of the TEAM!
19Parent/Coach Communication
- I am very pleased that your son has chosen to
participate in the White River Football program. - We will do all we can to provide a positive
experience for your son
20COMMUNICATION YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM YOUR SONS

- 2. Expectations the coach has for your son.

- 1. Concerns expressed directly to the coach
first. - 2. Notification of schedule conflicts well in
advance. - 3. Specific concerns in regard to a coachs
philosophy and/or expectations.
22- As your son becomes involved in the athletic
programs at WRHS, he will experience some of the
most rewarding moments of his life. It is also
important to understand that there will be times
when things do not go the way your son wishes.
These situations also create opportunities for
lifelong learning. At these times, discussions
with the coach may be the quickest and most
effective way to clear up issues and avoid
misunderstandings.
23APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH THE COACHES
- 1. The treatment of your son psychologically and
physically. - 2. Ways to help your son improve.
- 3. Concerns about your sons behavior.
- 4. Playing Time
24- At times it may be difficult to accept the
fact that your son is not playing as much as you
or he would like, or the position. Coaches are
professionals who make judgment decisions based
on what they believe are best for the team and
all involved. As you have seen from the list
above, certain things can and should be discussed
with the coach.
25When it is all said and done the coach(es) will
have the final say in
- 1. Playing Time
- 2. Team strategy.

- 3. If the coach cannot be reached in a reasonable

and usually do not work well for any of the
parties involved.
27THE NEXT STEP
- What can a parent do if the meeting with the
coach did not provide a satisfactory resolution? - Call and set up an appointment with the AD to
discuss the situation. At this meeting the
