I want to write to help people understand Dyslexia. To define it, to conceptualize it, and to perhaps recognize it. I believe this type of writing will also help to reduce some of the stigma that can occur around the label Dyslexia. I am composing a 2-part blog series around this. I want to unpack the definition of Dyslexia that I provided to you in part 1 of this series. As a refresher, I will provide the definition again: “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent reading word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.”
