Injuries affect every player
  • Injuries affect 100 of professional footballers
during their careers, with injury prevalence
    increasing with age.
  • Generally retirement is forced on players (by
injuries or loss of ability) rather than chosen
    by them.
  • The extent to which injury contributes to
retirement (and also loss of ability) is very
    subjective.

Player perspective
  • No data on player perspective in AFL, but no
doubt it would be higher than figures presented
for medicos assessments (29 due to injury).
  • Player perspective available for other sports
NFL, 41 of players retired from the game due to
injury, 47 have arthritis later in life Soccer
47 retire from game due to injury.

Local anaesthetic use
  • Fortunately causes of retirement due to injury
(knee) local anaesthetic use (A/C, ribs,
    fingers) have little overlap
  • Some exceptions
  • Neither of these areas is surveyed optimally
  • Medicolegal barriers
