Biliary Atresia is a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts mostly occurring in infants. The early symptoms of the disease start developing anytime between 2-8 weeks after birth. Bile is a liquid produced by the cells in the liver which helps digest fat.
Progressive damage of extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts secondary to inflammation, leading to fibrosis, biliary cirrhosis, and eventual liver failure.
A Liver Transplant Surgery is required when the liver functions are damaged beyond the body capacity to regenerate. In children, a common reason for liver transplant is biliary atresia caused due to underdeveloped bile ducts. In adults, the most common cause of liver disease is chronic infection with Hepatitis C virus. Other causes include liver damage due to prolonged alcoholism, Fatty Liver Disease, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Liver Cancer among other conditions.

Liver transplantation is surgery to remove a diseased liver and replace it with a healthy liver from an organ donor. A liver transplant is necessary when disease makes the liver stop working. The most common reason for liver transplantation in adults is cirrhosis, a disease in which healthy liver cells are killed and replaced with scar tissue. The most common reason for transplantation in children is biliary atresia, a disease in which the ducts that carry bile out of the liver are missing or damaged.
