Valletta is the smallest capital city in Europe with a surface area of just 0.55 km² and just over 7,000 inhabitants (only the Vatican City is smaller) The entire city of Valletta is classified a UNESCO World Heritage site. Though the city was built on a peninsula of only 1km by 600m, Europe’s southernmost capital is abundant in historical sights. UNESCO described Valletta as “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world” when it named Valletta a World Heritage Site.
