What is Cupping?

• Being non-judgemental
• Definition
• Al-Hejamah (Cupping) literally means to suck
• Ancient method of treatment and cure
• broad range of conditions
• blood diseases, sterility/impotency, skin
  diseases, arthritis/rheumatism, back pain,
  migraines and general well-being
• Aim to remove blood that is potentially harmful
  to the body system leading to an improvement in
  well-being

History of Cupping

• Has been used in almost every culture throughout
  history
• The Lancet was traditionally utilised in
  venesection and to prick boils
• In the Middle-East and Far East, part of medical
  practice for three millennia
• Hippocrates (400 BC) and ancient Egyptians -Ebers
  Papyrus (1550 BC) Cupping (Curtis, 2005)
• In the Middle and Far East, the practice has
  continued and is flourishing again

Benefits of Cupping

• Benefits of cupping are diverse but unproven.
• Circulatory function and autonomic nervous
  system.
• Pain
• Relaxation of muscle
• Effects upon the skin
• Effects upon Joints
• Effects upon the GI system (digestion)
• Detoxification application

Contraindications

• No major side effects, minimal discomfort
• local anaesthetic can be administered
• slight light headedness
• Pregnant women or menstruating women,
• cancer (metastatic) patients and patients
• bone fractures or muscle spasms
• site of DVT, where there are ulcers, arteries or
  places where a pulse can be felt (Chirali,
  1999,).

• neuro-transmitter release ?
• vasoconstriction and dilatation ?
• the gates for pain in the CNS which interpret
  pain sensation
• (NIH Consensus Development Panel, 1998 Schulte,
  1996).

• Stimulation of Acupoints ? overwhelming of pain
  gates ? closure of the gates? pain reduction
  (Oumeish, 1998 Cadwell, 1998), and thus an
  improvement in quality of life.
• Similarities between Cupping Therapy and
  Acupuncture.
• Similar mechanism of biological action.

The impact of Cupping Therapy Well-Being (Tables
1 and 2)

• Difficult to quantify exactly the extent of exact
  impact on well-being
• An increase of overall 1/10 was achieved and was
  maintained
• Supported by the paired sample t-test (p
  0.05).
• Therefore
• Biological benefits of cupping therapy in
  conjunction with the psychological uses of
  cupping collectively induce a feeling of physical
  and psychological well being.
