2
APPLICATION OF CERAMICS
  • INSULATOR

3
INSULATOR
  • There are large number of applications of
ceramics in number of fields but here we are
concerned about one of the most important and
widespread application of ceramics that is
    insulator.
  • An insulator, also called a dielectric, is a
material that resists the flow of electric
    current.

4
INSULATORS
  • Used in parts of electrical equipment.
  • These are characterized by having a large band
    gap.
  • Insulators suffer from the phenomenon of
    electrical breakdown.

5
PIN INSULATOR
  • These are available in both one piece and multi
piece construct are less vulnerable to damage and
can normally withstand the line voltage for a
    considerable time without difficulty. Generally
    are of two types11K.V 22 K.V.

6
DISC INSULATOR
  • Smooth rounded contours of shell provide
protection against chipping. Caps are made of
malleable cast irons and pins of forged steel.
These are galvanized to provide better protection
    against corrosion.

7
CAPACITOR BUSHING
  • Capacitor bushing are generally suitable for use
    in high-voltage applications. Their thermal
resistant property makes them extensively used in
    electrical industry.

8
LIGHTNING ARRESTOR
  • Lightning arrestor shell, are used to protect
the house in case lightning struck the antenna.
These are usually made of porcelain, Bakelite, or
    glass.

9
POST INSULATOR
  • Post insulators are made from high quality
    electrical grade porcelain which provides
excellent electrical and mechanical properties .
These insulators have a metal bolt down base as
    opposed to threads

10
MANUFACTURING OF INSULATORS
  • Presently the manufacturing of insulators is Age
    old method traditional process.
  • And it is not Cost Effective in Globalize
    Competitive market.
  • Traditional shifting towards advanced.

11
TRADITIONAL PROCESS
12
INSULATOR MANUFACTURING
  • Traditional process not effective.
  • Low rates
  • Poor quality
  • High rejection
  • Poor machinery

13
ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNICAL ROUTE
  • Higher Productivity with atomization in materials
    flow.
  • Reducing rejection through advance techniques
    Process Control
  • Utilization of non-conventional raw-materials

14
RAW MATERIALS
  • Basic raw materials used in the manufacturing
    of insulators are
  • QUARTZ
  • FELDSPAR
  • DIFFERENT TYPE OF CLAYS

15
ADVANCEMENT IN RAW MATERIAL
  • Raw materials are not checked properly, contains
    impurities, free silica etc.
  • Microstructure is not as required to give
    engineering propertiesfailed at site by
    electrical

16
MACHINERY USED
  • BALL MILL
  • PUG MILL
  • COPYING AND MAKING MACHINES
  • TUNNEL KILN

17
ADVANCEMENT-BALL MILL
  • Ratio of materials
  • Refilling of pebbles
  • Water quantity
  • Proper management of ball mill

18
ADVANCEMENT-PUG MILL
  • Proper de-airing
  • Vacuum pump must be configured properly
  • Air bubbles must be removed properly

19
ADVANCEMENT-COPYING AND MAKING
  • Change of blades at regular intervals
  • Must be done in proper way to avoid micro cracks

20
ADVANCEMENT-TUNNEL KILN
  • Top and bottom temp difference on trolleys
  • Non uniform firing curve
  • Proper burner adjustment

21
IMPORTANT TESTS
  • HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING TRANSFORMER
  • POROSTY MACHINE TESTING MACHINE
  • MECHANICAL LOAD AND MEASURING SETUP
  • UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE
  • OIL BATH TEST
  • GALVANIZING TEST
  • TEMP. CYCLE TEST SET
