PROFILES OF COURAGE AND COMPASSION
3
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world. Indeed,
it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret
Mead
4
The staff, partners and beneficiaries of CRS have
joined together to plant seeds of change
throughout the world. With courage and
compassion, these individuals are continually
rising above challenges that on the surface
appear insurmountable. Their dedication is
opening the doors to a new world.

AIDS

7
To many, the AIDS pandemic seems like an obstacle
impossible to overcome. The prevalence is
alarmingly high, but every day, we are making
gains in mitigating its effects and preventing it
from spreading further. Our beneficiaries are
particular heroes in our fight against AIDS.
Their courage in their own battle against AIDS
and their support of others with the disease have
made them models of hope within their
communities.
8
Lavabi
9
Lavabi is a leading member of the CRS-backed
Wekembe Microfinance group in Luwero, Uganda.
Her participation has enabled her to purchase a
bike, which her grandson uses as a taxi. Their
earnings help support five AIDS orphans she is
raising.
10
Jessica
11
Jessica is a participant of the Wekembe
Microfinance group. With her loan, she started a
handicraft business, which helps her support her
four children. Jessica is HIV-positive and lost
her husband to the disease in 2004. Since
learning she was infected, Jessica has encouraged
others to get tested and has served as a source
of support and strength for her community.
12
Kulumba
13
Kulumba was born HIV positive and lost both of
his parents to AIDS. He arrived at
CRS-supported Kamwokya Christian Caring Community
as a desperately ill, undernourished infant. The
staff took him in and has cared for him ever
since. Their support has been instrumental in
keeping Kulumba alive. Today, he is a happy
child, eager to share his story.
14
VIOLENCE
15
For 20 years, the Acholi people of Northern
Uganda have been living in nearly constant
violence. The Lords Resistance Army, LRA, has
targeted children, abducting them and forcing
them to commit unspeakable atrocities. Despite
the continual fighting, there are many whose
strength and valor have helped bring the hope of
peace to a land of war.
16
At an enormous risk to her own safety, Sister
Pauline Acayo of CRS has dedicated her life to
building peace in her community.
17
She helps rehabilitate children and young adults
who have escaped the LRA. Despite the
unimaginable trauma these individuals have faced,
the dedication of Sr. Pauline, CRS, and our
partners has enabled them to embark on the long
road to healing and hope.
18
In the face on ongoing conflict, Sister Pauline,
whose work has been recognized internationally,
continues to be a beacon of hope for her people.
"I must talk on behalf of the voiceless," she
says. "Only when justice is done will I stop
talking."
19
CRS supports agricultural programs for people
living in camps for people displaced by the war.
These programs help them become less dependent on
food aid and also help them develop skills that
they can take back home when peace returns to
their communities.

Ida O-ooh-ma escaped an LRA raid after her
husband and two children were murdered. She left
her home with her four surviving children and no
material possessions.
22
Now, just a few years later, Ida owns five
businesses and 10 homes, which she rents out for
profit. She also helped to form the Karuma
Village branch of HOFOKAM Limited, a CRS-backed
microfinance union that provides low-interest
loans to individuals like herself throughout
northern Uganda.
23
With a loan of 300, Kiza Noreena opened a
restaurant in a camp for displaced people. With
her profits, she was able to send her daughters
to school.

HUNGER

26
At any given time, there are at least one million
people in Ethiopia who rely on international food
aid to survive. Although these people work hard
to feed their families, environmental degradation
and lower rainfalls are making this task more
difficult. CRS provides these families with food
and other resources to help them restore their
environment and access other sources of water.

CRS coordinates all emergency U.S. food aid that
arrives in Ethiopia. We work with our partners
throughout the country to ensure reliable, fair
distributions. The hard work of the CRS Ethiopia
staff has created one of the most respected,
efficient food aid programs in the world.

35
These systems have two major benefits they allow
families to produce healthier foods for their
children and they provide clean, safe water.
36
Healthier food and water mean healthier, happier,
longer-lived children.
