What is symbiosis?
  • Concise Oxford Dictionary, 8th Edition
  • An interaction between two different organisms
living in close physical association to the
    advantage of both

3
What is Industrial Symbiosis ?
  • Modified from Chertow, Yale 2000
  • Industrial symbiosis engages traditionally
separate industries and other organisations in a
    collective approach to competitive advantage
    involving physical exchanges of materials,
energy, water and/or by products together with
collaboration on the shared use of assets,
    logistics, experts and knowledge transfer.
  • Connecting Industry Creating Opportunity

4
Industrial Symbiosis a circular economy
5
What is NISP?
  • FREE support to industry
  • Funded and Sponsored by UK Government (Defra
    BERR)
  • Business led initiative
  • Programme Advisory Groups (PAG) Arla, Boots,
    Noble Foods etc)
  • National programme, regional delivery
  • 12 regional teams across the UK

6
Benefits of being a NISP Member
Access to skilled and knowledgeable
practitioners with experience in delivering
industrial symbiosis Identify new business
opportunities match haves and wants across
12,500 members Facilitate fresh links between
organisations and arrange introductions/meetings
and provide long-term synergy assistance NISP
facilitated workshops

7
Energy from milk
  • Changes to outlets available for milk wastes
created a need for a sustainable and cost
    effective solution
  • NISP promoted the concept of anaerobic digestion
(AD) with combined heat and power generation
    (CHP)
  • 1250 tonnes per year diverted
  • 32t CO2
  • Cost savings on waste transport and treatment
  • Additional sales for the AD plants

8
Recycling packs from potato snacks
  • CTO Holdings key waste streams going to landfill
    at high cost
  • NISP identified potential to recycle
    polypropylene sacking and plastic trays
  • Identified a local reprocessor Jayplas to
    purchase wastes
  • 2,500 cost savings and 11,000 sales per year
  • Diverted 55 tonnes of waste from landfill per
    year
  • Additional sales for reprocessor

9
Solution for poor quality effluent
  • Food manufacturers existing treatment plant
could no longer cope with high solid content
  • High effluent costs and risk of failing consent
    limits
  • NISP identified Treatchem solution quick
    installation dissolved air flotation plant
  • Enabled compliance
  • Reduced effluent costs
  • Provided data for rescaling effluent treatment
    plant

10
Innovative use of CO2
  • Terra Nitrogen looking for innovative uses for
    its by-products
  • NISP linked them with John Baarda Ltd who were
building a 12 million greenhouse to cultivate
over 300,000 tomato plants a year and could
    utilise CO2
  • Reduced emissions of 12,500 tonnes of CO2
  • Steam from plant also used to heat the
    greenhouses
  • Created 65 jobs

11
Current synergies
  • Difficult waste streams away from landfill
  • packaged food
  • contaminated plastics
  • Metallised polypropylene reclamation of aluminium
    and low grade plastics
  • Food fit for consumption to social enterprises
    and disadvantaged
  • Food wastes to pig feed, vermiculture, anaerobic
    digestion

12
NISP REDUCES
NISP INCREASES
  • Use of Virgin resources
  • Use of potable water
  • Hazardous waste
  • CO2 emissions
  • Transport
  • Pollution
  • Landfill
  • Costs
  • Risk
