Discussion of Readings
  • Driving questions
  • What types of design principles can a UCD
designer use to inform their design?
  • How are the available principles similar to, and
different from each other? What are the
implications for their use (e.g., ease of use,
    credibility, results)?
  • What are sources of design principles available
    to UCD designers?
  • What challenges arise in using design principles?
  • Class-generated concerns

4
Project Exercise Design IDue, 2/24/04
  • Prepare a proposed redesign of your product. Use
a combination of words and images to represent
your proposed redesign. Justify this design
using both design principles discussed in class
as well as the information you have about your
users, their tasks, and the contexts for their
tasks. Bring to class one copy of this exercise
for each member of the team and one copy for the
    instructors.

Paper Prototyping - Benefits
  • Benefits
  • Test your design with users before you code
  • Make fast changes
  • Find out what marketing really wants
  • Eliminate technology variables from the usability
    testing equation
  • Common Concerns
  • Validity ("Does it find real problems?")
  • Professionalism ("What will others think of it
    ... and us?")
  • Development resources ("Do we really have time to
do this? Is it just extra work?")
