Egyptians believed that after people died they
would still need their body in the
afterlife. When bodies were preserved they were
called mummies. After a body was mummified it
was put inside a large container called a
sarcophagus. Rich and important Egyptian
Pharaohs sarcophaguses were often decorated with
jewels, designs, and hieroglyphics.
