15
USAF Aircraft and Missions
16
E-3 Sentry (AWACS)
Mission The E-3 Sentry
is an airborne warning and control system (AWACS)
aircraft that provides all-weather surveillance,
command, control and communications needed by
commanders of U.S. and NATO air defense forces.
As proven in Desert Storm, it is the premier air
battle command and control aircraft in the world
today.
17
E-8 Joint STARS
Mission TheE-8C Joint
Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint
STARS) is an airborne battle management and
command and control (C2) platform that conducts
ground surveillance to develop an understanding
of the enemy situation and to support attack
operations and targeting that contributes to the
delay, disruption and destruction of enemy
forces. These functions support the primary
mission of Joint STARS which is to provide
dedicated support of ground commanders
requirements
18
F-15 Eagle
Mission The
F-15 Eagle is an all-weather, extremely
maneuverable, tactical fighter designed to permit
the Air Force to gain and maintain air
superiority in aerial combat.
19
F-15 E Strike Eagle
Mission The F-15E
Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter designed to
perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. An
array of avionics and electronics systems gives
the F-15E the capability to fight at low
altitude, day or night, and in inclement weather
and perform its primary function as an
air-to-ground attack aircraft.
20
F-16 Fighting Falcon
Mission The F-16
Fighting Falcon is a compact, multi-role fighter
aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has
proven itself in air-to-air combat and
air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively
low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the
United States and allied nations.
21
F-117 Nighthawk

Mission The F-117A Nighthawk is the world's
first operational aircraft designed to exploit
low-observable stealth technology. It can employ
a variety of weapons and is equipped with
sophisticated navigation and attack systems
integrated into a state-of-the-art digital
avionics suite that increases mission
effectiveness and reduces pilot workload.
Detailed planning for missions into highly
defended target areas is accomplished by an
automated mission planning system developed,
specifically, to take advantage of the unique
capabilities of the F-117A.
22
B-2 Spirit
Mission The B-2
Spirit is a multi-role bomber capable of
delivering both conventional and nuclear
munitions. A dramatic leap forward in technology,
the bomber represents a major milestone in the
U.S. bomber modernization program. The B-2 brings
massive firepower to bear, in a short time,
anywhere on the globe through previously
impenetrable defenses.
23
B-1 Lancer
Mission The B-1B is a
long-range strategic bomber, capable of flying
intercontinental missions without refueling, then
penetrating present and future sophisticated
enemy defenses. It can perform a variety of
missions, including that of a conventional
weapons carrier for theater operations.
24
B-52 Stratofortress
Mission Air Combat
Command's B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber that
can perform a variety of missions. The bomber is
capable of flying at high subsonic speeds at
altitudes up to 50,000 feet (15,166.6 meters). It
can carry nuclear or conventional ordnance with
worldwide precision navigation capability.

25
AC-130 Gunship
Mission The AC-130
gunship's primary missions are close air support,
air interdiction and force protection. Missions
in close air support are troops in contact,
convoy escort and urban operations. Air
interdiction missions are conducted against
preplanned targets or targets of opportunity.
Force protection missions include air base
defense and facilities defense.
26
A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog)
Mission The A-10
Thunderbolt is the first Air Force aircraft
specially designed for close air support of
ground forces. They are simple, effective and
survivable twin-engine jet aircraft that can be
used against all ground targets, including tanks
and other armored vehicles.
