Connotative Language
Words can have either positive or negative
connotations.
neutral
When I walked into the room I noticed a
smell. When I walked into the room I noticed a
stench. When I walked into the room I noticed an
aroma.

Why? Writers want to make sure that the reader
feels a certain way when reading a description of
something. They want to create an overall
general impression.

Bell-Work
  • Connotation is the emotional response evoked by a
    word, in contrast to its denotation, which is its
    literal or dictionary meaning.
  • In your group, write 5 sentences where you use a
    word for its connotation purpose rather than its
    denotation purpose.
  • Example The men recall sprawling in the lush
    outfields of their childhood. The word sprawling
    connotes that the men were carefree and relaxed
    in their childhood.
