CHARACTERISTICS

• Most members of this genus have a metallic black
  color with transverse stripes and a white
  underbelly.
• The metallic black color may appear dark blue in
  certain wavelengths of light, from which its
  Latin name is derived.

BEHAVIOUR

• Despite its toxic venom it is a very peaceful and
  inoffensive snake.
• It is quite inert during the daytime, where a lot
  of harassment will be required to get it to bite
  voluntarily.
• By night it is very active and will make every
  attempt to avoid a confrontation with human
  beings however if confronted it will make
  hissing sounds to warn the intruder and only
  strike if his warnings are not paid heed to.

FOOD

• Feeds mainly on rodents, frogs and other snakes.
• It is notorious for its appetite for snakes and
  frequently consumes blind snakes and other
  species including other members of the genus
  Bungarus.
• It is in the pursuit of rodents that it often
  ends up in human dwellings.

BREEDING

• It is oviparous and the eggs are laid in May,
  June and July.
• The clutch varies from 6 to 10 and the eggs
  measure 35 mm x 19 mm.
• They are often laid under a log and the female
  incubates the brood by wrapping around them.
• The eggs hatch after a month or so.

GROWTH

• Neonates measure 275 mm upon hatching and double
  their length in their first year of life.
• These snakes reach maturity when they are over
  2-3 years old. By then they measure 85 cm.
• Males are longer and more numerous than females
  and also have proportionately a longer tail.
• The maximum length of these snakes is about 120
  cm.

VENOM

• Lethally venomous.
• The venom gradually paralyses the nervous system.
• It also destroys the red blood corpuscles.
• Death is caused by asphyxiation after the
  respiratory system is shut down.
• Therefore medical attention should be sought
  with immediate effect and antivenin administered
  or else a bit could be fatal within 12 hours.

After giving Bungarus 30 C, one dose to the
patient, the patient developed clinical proving
with the following symptoms

• Dreams of fighting with ghost and robber, waking
  him up.
• Dreams of being pursued by ghosts and giants.
  These giants have sprung up from the graveyard
  and are pursuing him. Patient is running away
  till he is exhausted. Ultimately he collapses. He
  feels bad since he could not run further.

• Dreams of being imprisoned where the jailors are
  burly and viscious people and not actual
  policemen. He is too weak to fight them.
• Dreams of being in a locked room where wild
  animals are let loose in the prison and he is
  unable to escape. But he prefers to close his
  eyes and go to sleep.
• He wakes up with a fright from these dreams.
