Background
  • During June of 2006 150 self administered
    questionnaires were distributed and collected
    amongst present Literacy Council students.
  • The purpose of this survey was two-fold.
  • To understand the goals of the present students
    in regard to their classes.
  • To understand how the Literacy Council is meeting
    the needs and goals of its students.

  • Note A copy of the survey can be found
    in the appendix.

Executive Summary
  • Literacy Council students want to succeed in
    their lives via enhanced communication skills.
  • Studying English at the Literacy Council has
    helped the students succeed in their daily lives
    such as making purchases, going to the doctor and
    getting a better job.
  • Students work hard with high attendance levels
    and most study outside of classes at least an
    hour per week.
  • The Literacy Council teachers, tutors and staff
    received excellent ratings from their students.

  • Students who work with tutors and those in group
    classes report high attendance levels.
  • 88 of students with tutors meet twice a week.
  • 92 of students in group classes attend twice a
    week at least 75 of the time.
  • Those student who miss sessions cite work and
    time constraint issues as the main cause.

  • The Literacy Council classes are at the right
    level for their students.
  • 88 of the students report that their classes are
    at the right level.
  • 6 say that they are too easy.
  • 6 say they are too difficult.

  • Only 38 of the students report using the
    Literacy Council Computers this year.
  • 100 of the students who use the computers report
    that the computers help them learn English.
  • Of the 62 did not use the computer
  • 33 said they had time constraints, taking care
    of family or working.
  • 22 said they did not know how to use the
    computers
  • 11 cited lack of transportation
  • 11 said that they use a computer at home or at
    the library
  • Others reported that they take lessons at Pueblo
    Bonita where there are no computers

  • 71 of all Students study outside of their
    classrooms.
  • Most study more than one hour per week.

    received high marks from their students.
  • 99 of the students rated the staff excellent or
    very good.

    tutors excellent or very good.
