What is Hemophilia?

• Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding, or
  coagulation, disorder Persons with hemophilia
  lack the ability to stop bleeding because of the
  low levels, or complete absence, of specific
  proteins, called factors

• hemophilia A - lack of factor VIII
• hemophilia B - lack of factor IX
• Type A B are inherited
• diseases passed on the X Chrom.
• Causes by new or spontaneous development of a
  defective gene

• Mutations are in the F8 and F9 gene
• F8 is type A
• F9 is type B
• Type A is common 1 in 5,000 to10,000 people
• Type B is 1 in 20,000 to 34,500 people

• Dont pass to their sons
• Pass to their daughters

• Females if inherited
• 50 chance to pass on to male offspring
• excessive menstrual bleeding
• frequent or severe nosebleeds
• bleeding after dental procedures or surgery
