What is it?

• In December of 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army
  marched into China's capital city of Nanking and
  proceeded to murder 300,000 out of 600,000
  civilians and soldiers in the city
• The six weeks of carnage would become known as
  the Rape of Nanking
• The single worst atrocity during the World War II
  era in either the European or Pacific theaters of
  war.

Importance

• Having already captured China's Manchurian region
  (1931) and Jehol province (1933), the Japanese
  were waiting for a pretext to invade and occupy
  the whole of China.
• In July 1937, the tensions between Chinese troops
  and
• Japanese troops engaged in military exercises on
  occupied
• Chinese territory made an exchange of firing near
  Peking (now Beijing)
• The Japanese used this incident as an excuse to
  wage all out war against china
• .

What they did

• the Japanese forced Chinese men to rape their own
  daughters, sons to rape their mothers, and
  brothers their sisters, while the rest of the
  family was made to watch
• Pregnant women were raped than had there stomach
  slit open and they torn out the fetuses
• Old women over the age of 70 as well as girls
  under 8 were sexually abused
• More than 20,000-80,000 females were ganged raped
  by Japanese soldiers than stabbed to death with
  bayonets
• The Japanese forced the Chinese to bury each
  other alive in the dirt
• .
