Title: The Matrix of Domination

1
The Matrix of Domination
  • Capitalism and Social Inequality

2
Matrix of Domination
  • Interlocking axes of oppression that stem from
    societal configurations including (but not
limited to) race, class, gender, and sexual
    orientation.
  • It demonstrates the interconnectedness of systems
    of privilege/oppression across social categories.
  • Heterosexism reinforces male privilege and vice
    versa.
  • One can be simultaneously oppressed and an
    oppressor.

3
Understanding Intersections Between Class and
Race/Racism
  • 1) Racism has been around a very long time.
Understanding the specific history is necessary.
  • 2) Racism emerges in Europe and the Americas
with the expansion of capitalism as an economic
    system

4
Economic Systems are the Basis for Other
Institutions
  • Because economic systems are the source of
wealth, they are also the basis for every social
institution, since the state and church and
universities and the like cannot survive without
an economic base. Johnson p. 43

5
How Capitalism works
  • Investors use existing capital to invest in raw
materials and labor. New products, goods, and
    services result.
  • Profit is created by a differential between input
    costs (raw materials, infrastructure, labor).
  • The Profit is divided among investors.

6
Fundamental Contradiction of Capitalism
  • Capitalism requires an ever increasing rate of
profit, but the tendency is for the rate of
    profit to decline.

7
So how does one Create an Increasing Rate of
Profit
  • 1) Conglomeration
  • 2) Culture of Lack
  • 3) Promote Identity as Linked to Consumption
  • 4) Reduce In-put Costs

8
Capitalism and Class
  • As the rate of profit declines, the tendency is
    to lower input costs.
  • Hence, the gap between the rich and the poor
    expands.

9
Capitalism and Racism
  • Direct
  • Slavery
  • Conquest
  • Indirect
  • Stratification within classes
  • Gender Stratification

10
Capitalism and Racism
  • To justify such direct forms of imperialism and
oppression, whites developed the idea of
whiteness to define a privileged social category
elevated above everyone who wasnt included in
it. This made it possible to reconcile conquest,
treachery, slavery and genocide with the nations
newly professed ideals of democracy, freedom, and
    human dignity. Johnson, p. 49

11
Capitalism and Sexism
  • Lower Wages
  • 76 Cents on the dollar
  • Feminized occupations are underpaid relative to
    male dominated occupations.
  • Women in both male and female dominated
occupations earn less than their male
    counterparts regardless of education, experience
    and performance.

12
Capitalism and Heterosexism
  • Same sex couples are not provided the same
benefits and protections as straight couples.

13
Discussion Exercise
  • How do you see the relationship between class and
other forms of oppression enacted? Be sure to
discuss in terms of privilege and oppression.

14
The Matrix of Domination and the Paradox of Being
Privileged and Unprivileged at the Same Time
15
Matrix of Domination (Cont.)
  • One has multiple aspects to identity, hence, one
may be privileged on one axes and oppressed on
    another.
  • Which aspects to people tend to see as more
    central to identity?

16
The Matrix and Privilege
  • Privilege isnt about the individual, its about
    social categories.
  • Privilege operates across multiple categories
    simultaneously.
  • The Connections between forms of privilege are
    not immediately obvious.
  • -Each form of privilege, exists only as part of a
much larger system of privilege. Each form only
exists in relation to all the rest.

17
The Power of the Matrix
  • Categories reinforce each other- men and women
members of the favored groups command more power,
more prestige, and more property than the members
of the disfavored groups. Lorber p. 103

18
The Matrix and Privilege (cont.)
  • The matrix makes it clear that work for change
needs to focus on the idea of privilege itself
    and forms it takes.

19
Examples of the Matrix
  • How does the matrix operate?

20
Gender and Power
  • Patriarchy- refers to forms of social
organization in which men are dominant over
women. It is interpersonal and structural.
  • Public Patriarchy- refers to dominance in the
    institutions of the larger society.
  • Capitalist Patriarchy- systems in which
    capitalism and patriarchy are inter-related.
There is a gendered division of labor, male
    privilege is the norm.
