OBJECTIVES
  • Causes of Hot Brakes
  • Hazards
  • Approaching the aircraft
  • Dealing with the emergency
  • Extinguishing agents

6
Causes of Hot Brakes
  • Aircraft weight
  • Landing speeds
  • Extraordinary braking
  • Refused take- off (RTO)

7
Hazards
  • Tire failure
  • Fusible plugs
  • Disintegration of wheel assembly
  • Danger zone ( Approx. 300 feet )

8
Approaching the Aircraft
  • Establish communication with pilot
  • Approach from front or aft
  • Type of aircraft
  • Observe tire condition
  • Is there smoke or fire ?

Extinguishing Agents
  • Dry chemical
  • Dry powder
  • Foam
  • Water
  • Dual agent

15
A New Way of Thinking
16
Cera-Metalic/Composite Brakes
  • All new Aircraft have them
  • Most older Aircraft have changed to them
  • Will withstand higher temps than steel by
    absorbing and dissipating heat better

17
Boeing Flight Test
  • Minor temperatures - air or water cool
  • Extreme temperatures - cool with water
  • If Fusible Plug fails - temperatures are extreme

Water
  • When using water
  • Approx. 1500 gal. per wheel set
  • Use hand line / snozzle / turret
  • Cool entire wheel and brake
  • Be aggressive!

22
Fire
  • If fire is present
  • Small tire fire - use water
  • Large fire - treat as any aircraft fire
  • attack with large amounts of water if fuel
    cells are compromised use foam!

23
Steel Brakes
  • If tires have deflated
  • Brakes are already warped!
  • Water will not matter at this point

24
LANDING GEAR EMERGENCIES AND TIRE FAILURE
25
NOSE GEAR
  • Tire Failure
  • Gear Damage
  • Gear not down and locked in place
  • Possible Belly Landing
  • WATCH OUT!
