Why Flight Test ?
  • Adequate replication on the ground of flight
    conditions is often impractical
  • Particular flight conditions may be
    insufficiently well defined to be simulated
  • Almost all aircraft incorporate many system whose
    interactions are complex
  • Discrepancies between actual flight behavior and
    predicted. Flight test data is essential to
    improve accuracy of the models and simulation.

Flight Test is required to prove that the
man/machine combination can achieve the desired
performance.

Nature of Flight Test
  • Inherently Hazardous
  • New configuration unproven system at the edge
    and beyond of flight envelope.
  • Explore the most critical configuration and
    failure cases of system.
  • Expensive
  • Requires instrumentations, infrastructure,
    special maintenance of test vehicle, test area,
    specific weather conditions and qualified people.
  • Involving many parties.

  • Extensive preparation and careful planning.

General Approach of Flight Testing
Testing in operationally representative condition
in a controlled, incremental manner with critical
parameters monitored via appropriate
instrumentation.
  • Starting from less hazardous and gradually
    towards more hazardous case
  • Comparison between test results and prediction
  • Explore aircraft envelope to ensure that aircraft
    meets requirements at the most critical
    conditions.
  • Testing in a known and controlled condition
    (suitable weather, low air traffic density,
    flight test instrumentation, safety equipments
    and dedicated test support)

  • Experimental Flight Test
  • Research and Development purposes
  • Development and Certification Flight Test
  • Demonstration for the purpose of showing
    compliance with design objective and/or
    airworthiness requirement.
  • Must be performed using representative aircraft,
    proven instrumentation and test maneuver as per
    requirements.
