How do different materials move in plants?

• Vascular plants use transport system
• Transport system roots, stems leaves

Root

• Absorbs water minerals
• Stores food
• Anchors plant
• Cells carry water and minerals up the stem to the
  leaves

Stem

• Main stalk of plant
• Inside stem, materials move up and down through
  tissue
• Trunk main stem of a tree

Leaf

• Usually grows from stem of plant
• Take in and release gases into air
• Use water, carbon dioxide, sun to create sugar
  (food)
• Petiole connects leaf to stem or branch
• Veins carry materials in leaf

What is the transport system made of?

• Xylem tissue that moves water and materials up
  from roots
• Phloem tissue that moves the sugar to parts of
  plant
• Cambium layer that separates xylem and phloem
  produces new cells

Transport system in trees

• Outer layer bark
• Each year new layer of xylem, these are the
  rings of a tree
• Can use rings to tell weather
• Lighter ring form during spring when theres
  water
• Darker ring grows during autumn
• Years with lots of rain have bigger rings

How are roots different?

• Taproots one large root with a few branching,
  hairy roots
• Fibrous roots thin branching roots

• Prop roots like fingers out of the bottom of
  the stem
• Aerial roots never touch the ground, take in
  moisture from the air
